Critically Acclaimed Production The Years Transfers to the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre

Sonia Friedman Productions has announced the West End transfer of The Years, a critically acclaimed adaptation of Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux’s semi-autobiographical novel Les Années. Directed and adapted by Eline Arbo with an English version by Stephanie Bain, this production captivated audiences in its sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre, following a successful premiere at Internationaal Theater Amsterdam. The Years will run at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 24 January to 19 April 2025.

Critics have praised The Years as a “masterpiece” (The Guardian) and an experience that “moves in ways theatre often tries to but rarely achieves” (The Independent). The production features powerful performances from Deborah Findlay, Romola Garai*, Gina McKee, Anjli Mohindra, and Harmony Rose-Bremner, who collectively portray the life of one woman, capturing her experiences against the evolving landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries.

With each “click” of memory, Ernaux’s story unfolds: a child growing up amidst post-war ruins, a student exploring new freedoms, an activist championing rights, a wife, mother, lover, and grandmother – each phase of life layered with personal and political significance. This staging captures Ernaux’s meditation on memory with depth, surprise, and theatrical virtuosity, leading audiences through a journey that pairs “the dead with the living, real with imaginary beings, dreams with history.”

The creative team includes Music Supervisor and Sound Designer Thijs van Vuure, Set Designer Juul Dekker, Costume Designer Rebekka Wörmann, Lighting Designer Varja Klosse, and Casting Director Amy Ball CDG. Associate direction is by Yasmin Hafesji. Originally produced by Het Nationale Theater as De Jaren in 2022, The Years has gained acclaim across Europe and is poised to offer a poignant theatrical experience in its West End debut.

Note: Romola Garai will perform until 8 March, with additional casting to be announced.

Dear Evan Hansen UK Tour Shines with Stellar Cast Led by Ryan Kopel as Evan

Dear Evan Hansen (UK & Ireland Tour)
New Victoria Theatre

The UK touring production of Dear Evan Hansen is a powerful reimagining of this iconic musical, bringing a fresh perspective on the poignant themes of loneliness, mental health, and connection. With an emotionally charged lead performance by Ryan Kopel as Evan, this tour delivers an impactful night at the theatre, even if certain plot elements occasionally feel drawn out.

The story centers on Evan Hansen, an anxious high schooler who, after a classmate's tragic death, finds himself unintentionally entwined in a lie that spirals beyond his control. His journey explores themes of identity, social isolation, and the quest for belonging- a plot that resonates as deeply now as it did on the West End.

One of the biggest draws of this tour is the remarkable cast, each bringing a fresh, dynamic energy to their roles. Ryan Kopel’s portrayal of Evan is truly outstanding. The role is demanding, both physically and emotionally, requiring stamina, vulnerability, and incredible vocal control- Kopel delivers on all fronts. His clear, supported voice was faultless, his high notes beautifully sustained, adding depth to Evan's raw emotional state. In key numbers like 'Waving Through a Window' and 'Words Fail', Kopel navigates complex vocal lines with ease, creating a deeply moving experience for the audience.

Other cast members also stand out, especially Alice Fearn as Evan’s mother Heidi, whose raw emotion and vocal strength bring heart to the challenging role of a single mother trying to connect with her son. Lauren Conroy as Zoe Murphy brings a nuanced, sensitive touch to Evan’s love interest, balancing warmth with resilience. Tom Dickerson brings excellent comic relief to the musical as Jared Kleinman, bouncing off the other cast members brilliantly, as well as providing some great vocals. Killian Thomas Lefevre is engaging and interesting as Connor Murphy, while Vivian Panka brings real depth and charm to Alana Back. Meanwhile, Helen Anker and Richard Hurst as Cynthia and Larry Murphy round out a strong ensemble, infusing depth into the grieving parents navigating an unimaginable loss.

While the touring version of Dear Evan Hansen maintains the essence of the original West End production, subtle changes give it a fresh appeal. The staging is slightly pared down but still uses projections to convey the overwhelming impact of social media on Evan’s life. This simplified set design may lack the intricate detail of the West End, but it shifts the focus squarely onto the characters’ raw emotions, allowing the actors’ performances to truly shine.

The music, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, is the highlight and fundamental strength of the production. Songs like 'For Forever', 'Only Us' and the powerful ensemble number 'You Will Be Found' are beautifully melodic and resonate deeply, perfectly mirroring Evan's emotional turmoil and the longing for connection that permeates the story. That said, the show’s pacing lags at points, especially in the second act. Certain scenes feel slightly stretched, and the plot occasionally meanders, which impacts the overall flow. Nonetheless, the emotionally charged score and Kopel’s riveting performance help the production recover from these slower moments.

Ryan Kopel’s portrayal of Evan is nothing short of stellar, capturing the emotional weight of the role with impeccable vocal and physical stamina.”
Ultimately, this touring production of Dear Evan Hansen offers a heartfelt, stirring experience, driven by a cast whose performances capture the story’s core themes. While the pacing could benefit from a tighter structure, the show’s ability to connect with audiences remains as strong as ever. Ryan Kopel’s Evan is a tour de force- worth experiencing for his performance alone, as well as for the lovely ensemble that brings this story to life across the UK.

Both actors are thrilled to breathe new life into these characters, with Flynn sharing her excitement to continue Alicia Silverstone’s legacy, saying:

I can’t wait for audiences to rediscover Cher’s wit and heart in a whole new way.”

Meanwhile, McAuley looks forward to channeling the charm of Paul Rudd’s original Josh, especially as he brings a new musical twist to the role.

Fans can already get a taste of the musical's vibe with the release of 'New Girl', a track featuring Flynn alongside KT Tunstall, who composed the original score. Tunstall, known for her hit songs 'Suddenly I See' and 'Black Horse and the Cherry Tree', collaborated with three-time Tony Award nominee Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid, Sister Act) to bring a contemporary, ’90s-inspired sound to the West End. Together, they capture the upbeat, fun-loving spirit of the original film with a fresh score that combines nostalgic ’90s pop with today’s musical stylings.

Amy Heckerling, the original writer-director of Clueless, is thrilled to see her characters return to the spotlight, noting:

With its fun plot, memorable characters, and catchy tunes, Clueless promises to be a majorly cool addition to the West End.

Casting Announced for Cyrano at Park Theatre

Cyrano, the Fringe First award-winning, gender-flipped retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, is set to light up Park Theatre, London, from December 11, 2024, to January 11, 2025, following a sold-out European premiere at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre. Written and performed by Australian actress and playwright Virginia Gay (Colin from Accounts, Winners & Losers), this reimagining redefines the classic with bold humour, heartfelt romance, and a fresh modern sensibility. Joining Gay as Cyrano are Jessica Whitehurst (Ridley, The Comedy of Errors) as Roxanne and Joseph Evans (Coronation Street) in his stage debut as Yan, alongside Tessa Wong, David Tarkenter, and Tanvi Virmani.

Directed by Clare Watson, Cyrano combines humour, aching romance, and musical interludes to tell the story of Cyrano, a witty wordsmith who conceals a personal shame behind her sparkling intelligence and charm. Cyrano, captivated by the brilliant and beautiful Roxanne, finds herself in a love triangle when Roxanne falls for Yan, a man with looks but few words. As Cyrano pours her heart out under the guise of Yan’s voice, she creates an unforgettable rom-com for the ages- filled with wit, longing, and the undeniable magic of theatre.

Described as “big-hearted, irreverent, and joyous,” Gay’s Cyrano is a tribute to hope, the search for connection, and the beauty of language. It’s an ode to the timeless power of theatre and its ability to draw out both laughter and tears.

Goldsmith and Yuspa have crafted a fresh adaptation for the stage, working alongside songwriters Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary (First Date, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) to give Jenna Rink’s story a new dimension.

The story follows 13-year-old Jenna, a quirky, awkward middle schooler who feels trapped in the struggles of high school social life. When she wishes to skip ahead to adulthood, Jenna magically wakes up “thirty, flirty, and thriving” with the glamorous job of editor at a high-end fashion magazine. But adulthood proves to be more complex than she imagined, and as Jenna uncovers the life she’s built, she goes on a journey of self-discovery, realizing what- and who- she left behind. With its signature mix of comedy, romance, and heart, 13 Going on 30 explores timeless themes of friendship, identity, and staying true to yourself, making it perfect for a new generation to experience on stage.

Goldsmith and Yuspa, who also wrote the musical’s book, are thrilled to revisit the story, marking the 20th anniversary of the original film. They shared their excitement, saying:

When we wrote the movie 13 Going on 30, we never dreamt that on the film’s 20th anniversary, we’d get the chance to see a whole new generation fall in love with Razzles and feel thirty, flirty, and thriving. It’s been a joy to work with ROYO, Revolution Studios, songwriters Alan Zachary & Michael Weiner, and director Andy Fickman to bring this story to life as a stage musical. We were thrilled by the audience’s response to our workshop last year, and now we can’t wait to officially open in Manchester at the legendary Opera House- the launchpad of so many iconic musicals. So bring your family, your friends, maybe a date, or just come alone- don’t be shy, we’re all nice. Hope you have as much fun seeing the show as we had making it!”

Tickets go on sale at exactly 1:30 PM on November 13th, so set your reminder to grab yours early for this must-see production. With the Manchester Opera House’s legacy as the launchpad of iconic musicals, anticipation is high for this adaptation to make its mark. He Sang to Me by Casey Tyler book review: A Delightfully Cheesy Ode to Broadway Romance

He Sang to Me by Casey Tyler
Self Published: 3rd October 2023 by Truelove Publishing

Casey Tyler's debut novel, He Sang to Me is a book that unabashedly caters to the delulu girlies, and as a self-proclaimed member of that tribe, I found myself both cringing and grinning through its pages. This 320 page tale, is reminiscent of a sweet and charming fanfic; intertwining the enchanting worlds of Broadway and romance – two of this reader's, favourite things.

The narrative unfolds amidst the hustle and bustle of New York City, and the author's vivid descriptions and location name drops skilfully bring the city to life. As well as this the pages are dotted with stagey references that act like hidden treasures for theatre enthusiasts like myself. The book really evokes the frenetic energy of the theatre district and certainly sparked my desire to hop on a flight back to New York to explore every corner of the city.

He Sang to Me follows Sunday Truelove, an aspiring actress who moves to New York to pursue her dreams. Within moments she wins tickets to the hottest show on Broadway and whilst she's there has a magical encounter with the leading man and famous British actor, Tyler Axel. From here the two enter a fairytale romance and discover whether they're truly meant to be.

Honestly, it's as cheesy as it sounds and I kind of loved it. There are all the classic tropes, from being spotted by paparazzi to caring for the sick partner and in a way it's pretty iconic. On the other hand, it's pretty basic. The characters aren't particularly developed, Sunday has extreme 'not like other girls' energy which is a little grating and the book, at times, tips into self-indulgence and lacks a grounded narrative. Despite the characters being in their late twenties and thirties, their personalities and emotional journeys comes across quite immature and lean towards a younger audience. It's clear that a bit more editing and development could add a layer of realism to their characterisations. Some of the British aspects were also inaccurate and took me out of the world a little but these are definitely things that could be tweaked and edited for future prints. Nevertheless, the book shines in capturing the essence swooping romance and is a sweet stagey story, with some charming moments.

There are elements of the characters that I truly enjoyed such as Sunday's bright eyed optimism and Tyler's love for his family and his craft. I know I would fall for an ex-Fiyero with a killer voice, although in my experience they're never quite as unproblematic as Tyler!

The rest of the characters, while somewhat idealised, form a found family that's lovely to discover. The friendships and relationships are sprinkled with relatable moments, creating a sense of nostalgia for those who have ever dreamt of having a dreamy friend group.

The musical theatre aspects of the story are really fun but I do think it would be interesting to include more of the backstage aspect of Broadway. With both of the leads being so heavily ingrained in the world, it would be easy to explore but a lot of the plot points surrounding it are quite surface level and because of the idealised world they are living in, the challenging realities of the Broadway business don't get a light shone on them. I definitely think this is a story that could benefit from a sprinkle of grit to elevate it to the next level.

Casey clearly has a love and talent for writing and whilst I found the initial chapters a bit heavy-handed with unnecessary descriptions, the writing blooms and improves throughout and it's quite wonderful that she's has taken the plunge to write and self publish the story, I'll certainly be keeping an eye our for future (hopefully stagey) treats.

In a nutshell, He Sang to Me offers a quick and enjoyable escape for fans of theatre, celebrity/normal dating dynamics, and the allure of found family tropes. While it may not be a polished piece of literature, its endearing charm, lively New York setting, and relatable theatrical moments make it a worthwhile indulgence for those in need of a cosy break from reality.

Frankie and Beausy at Crazy Coqs review: A Spectacular Musical Showcase

Frankie and Beausy
Crazy Coqs
★★★★

Last night the Crazy Coqs played home to Frankie and Beausy, a high-end, West End musical extravaganza that left me thoroughly impressed. The talented duo, comprised of the fantastic Frances Ruffelle and the dashing Norman Bowman, created and performed a show with some magical moments. Under the skilful direction of Paul Baker, they took us on a captivating journey that began 26 years ago on a train station platform in Scotland.

The stage came alive as Beausy donned a Scottish tartan kilt and sporran, while Frankie exuded charm in her tartan bodice and platform shoes. Their outfits added a touch of punkish cheeky glamour to the already punchy and fun atmosphere of the show. With musical arrangements by David Barber, they delivered a medley of musical favourites, seamlessly transitioning from Brigadoon to Broadway, and from the Highlands to Hollywood. Their harmonies were beautifully blended, and they even treated us to a stunning rendition of Luther Vandross's 'A House is Not a Home'.

The grand finale was nothing short of spectacular, as they belted out The Proclaimers' iconic hit, 'I'm Gonna Be (500) Miles'. The backing trio, led by the talented Ryan McKenzie, also had their moment to shine with individual solos that had the entire audience clapping, tapping, and singing along. It was an electrifying experience that left everyone on a high.

I must say, I was blown away by the quality of this cabaret show. It was a must-see performance that exceeded my expectations. If you're lucky enough to secure a ticket, don't miss out on this gem. Otherwise, mark your calendars for their upcoming shows at 54 Below in New York this November. Frankie and Beausy are a true musical powerhouses, and their concert will provide an absolute delight for any theatre enthusiast.

Lavish revival of Lerner and Loewe’s 1956 masterwork…
The Washington Post

My Fair Lady tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young Cockney flower seller, and Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor who is determined to transform her into his idea of a “proper lady”. But who is really being transformed?

With a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe, MY FAIR LADY boasts a score including the classic songs “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “Get Me to the Church on Time,” “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” “On the Street Where You Live,” “The Rain in Spain,” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face.”

“Thrilling! Glorious and better than it ever was! A marvellous and transformative revival.”
New York Times

Adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s play and Gabriel Pascal’s motion picture Pygmalion, Lerner & Loewe’s MY FAIR LADY premiered on Broadway in March 1956, winning 6 Tony Awards including Best Musical, and becoming the longest-running musical in Broadway history at the time. Following this success, the production transferred to London in 1958, where it played in the West End for five and a half years.

MY FAIR LADY has seen many notable revivals and adaptations, including the acclaimed 1964 film starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison, which won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Most recently on the London stage, Cameron Mackintosh’s 2001 revival at Theatre Royal Drury Lane won three Olivier Awards, and later toured across the UK and Ireland in 2005.

James L. Nederlander, Jamie Wilson, Hunter Arnold, Playful Productions and the English National Opera present the Lincoln Center Theater production of Lerner & Loewe’s MY FAIR LADY at the London Coliseum, with sets by Michael Yeargan, costumes by Catherine Zuber, lighting by Donald Holder, sound by Marc Salzberg, original musical arrangements by Robert Russell Bennett and Phil Lang, and dance arrangements by Trude Rittmann.

Full casting for the London production will be announced in due course.
