Mamma Mia fever continues to swipe the UK as us sun-deprived Brits crave the Greek sea and sun, and the joyous ABBA music with which it's become synonymous. Mamma Mia! The Party aims to fill these cravings with a night of dinner theatre which entertains and delights from start to finish.
Upon entering the space in the O2, you are transported to a taverna on the island of Skopelos. Greeted with "Kalispera", smiles and drinks, the tones is set and you really do feel as if you've escaped from London. Thanks to the attention to detail throughout, none of the space feels tacky or cheap and each crevice feels authentically Greek. From posters on the walls to fountains and flowers dotted round, there's plenty to see purely on the journey to your seat.
The night is set out as an immersive show which is broken up by food and drink. The show plot is seriously flimsy and very pantomime-esque but the cast perform brilliantly and everything entertains. The performances of ABBA's music are camp and bold, and there are some unexpectedly magical moments. Everyone is part of the action, with waiters dancing and singing and everyone feeling as though they're part of an ABBA family.
The food is top notch (the olives are divine) and you get a lot. Various courses include greek treats such as tzatziki, lamb, octopus, spinach pie and so much more. The segues from the action to the courses being served are well carried out and the night as a whole flows wonderfully; particularly impressive when there are hundreds of guests a night! Perhaps the hefty price tag should include free soft drinks, but you do get a lot for your money, money, money and it's definitely a treat of an experience.
Gareth Owen's sound design means every moment is crystal clear as the cast bounce around and involve the audience throughout. Steph Parry gives a particularly strong performance throughout and as with the whole cast and team, is inviting and warm. As a whole this is a complete cheese fest and exactly what you'd expect from a Mamma Mia themed event. 35 songs are shoehorned into the flimsy story, there's pyrotechnics, acrobatics, flipper tricks and more. Certainly something for everyone!
There's no denying this is a pricey experience but it's so worth it if you want to channel your inner Julie Walters and feel like a Super Trouper for the night.

Sounds and Sorcery celebrating Disney Fantasia

The Vaults is one of London's most exciting venues. It's labyrinth of tunnels allow it to be easily changed into a whole world of magical mazes which provide the perfect space for immersive theatre. It's currently playing house for a multi-sensory experience which combines classical music, live performances and beautiful sets to transport us to the world of Disney's 1940 film, Fantasia. The experience is not a replica of the film, it is merely inspired by the classic; a certain mouse for example, never makes an appearance.
The goals of this show are clear, they want to enchant audiences and give them a magical night but personally it falls a little flat. In the entrance, audience members are given an ipod and a set of headphones which play varying pieces of music and tell us to wander freely throughout the various rooms. These include a volcano that seems set to erupt at any minute, a bubble wonderland, a frozen lake where lights fly around the ice whimsically and a garden of flowers where an omnipotent voice whispers, somewhat eerily, around us.
The overall concept is very reminiscent of the recent Opera: Passion, Power and Politics exhibition at the V&A which took audiences on a route around a large maze of rooms whilst playing varying pieces of music and providing facts and information on the piece and era it was written/performed. Sounds and Sorcery takes the same idea but a lack of structure lets it down a lot. The idea of "choosing your own path" is exciting but if you choose wrong you are left to mill around for a long time, waiting for rooms to be ready, which takes away from the magic and leaves a lot of aimless, dead time.
Some of the rooms are exciting, namely the iconic Sorcerer's Apprentice where the actors whiz around under a spell and splash water on those in the closest proximity. The Dance of the Hours is also enjoyable thanks to the wonderful performers but the plot of the dance is unclear unless you realise that each person is playing an animal. There's a knock-kneed Flamingo, the boisterous Elephant, a hissing Crocodile who skilfully does some aerial skills and an attention loving Hippo. Each do a great job of performing but in comparison with the other rooms it feels random.
If all the rooms included performers it would be a much more enjoyable experience. Although Kitty Callister's designs are magical and bright and the stunning music such as Stravinsky's Rite of Spring which surrounds us is wonderful, there's nothing keeping us in each room for more than a minute or so.
The lack of structure combined with some fraying parts of the set make the whole thing feel amateurish and Sounds and Sorcery Presents Disney Fantasia doesn't quite hit the mystical mark it's aiming for. There are a few brief magical moments and the design is wonderful but there needs to be a cohesiveness and draw to really transport audiences and give them "wow" moments rather than, "that's cool, let's move on".

Crude, disgusting, shocking, amazing, outstanding. Just a few words to describe this mental but incredible production. Trainspotting Live, based on Irvine Welsh's 1993 book, follows a group of heroin addicts on their journey through life in an economically depressed part of Edinburgh.
I must admit, when I was handed my fluorescent wristband and shown into the space thumping with techno music like an underground rave, I was a little (okay a lot) scared. This fear remained with me for the first part of the show; my heart was racing and I was shocked and slightly appalled at what was going on. Having never seen or read Trainspotting Live, I had zero idea of what to expect but oh boy was I pleasantly surprised.
Sure this show is crazily abrasive and probably offensive to a lot of people but it's also funny, authentic, moving and inventive. The 75 minute performance is visceral and as long as you have an open mind that's ready to be shocked then it's totally for you.

This show is not for the faint of heart though. Lets just say that the actors are not the only people involved in the action of Trainspotting Live, so beware. Especially if you find yourself sat next to the dirtiest toilet known to man, or in the firing line of the of the products hurled out of it. This story is immersive and innovative whilst still capturing reality and being relatable for the people of today.
This darkly comic show has no boundaries and freely approaches nudity, drugs and sex. The young actors do a fantastic job of bringing this all to the audience and their free, energetic performances and blunt portrayal of addiction which will resonate and stay with you after the show. I felt so immersed that coming out was like waking up and having to readjust to the world.
From a technical standpoint, Trainspotting Live is outstanding. The entire cast of actors put their absolute all into every single moment and it honestly feels as though they're experiencing the whole show for the first time. Frankie O'Connor's performance as Renton particularly stands out but there is not a weak link in the cast.
The lighting design by Clancy Flynn is inventive, with the strobe lights used at the end creating a disorientating but mesmerising effect and Tom Lishman's sound design is constant enough that it blends in and becomes a part of the show instead of being a layer added on top just for the sake of it.

There are gasps, laughs and pained silences throughout and the full spectrum of emotions are truly explored. For a visceral and moving performance, like nothing else then please go and see Trainspotting Live. You'll be left feeling slightly drained, extremely shocked and really really wanting to go and clean yourself but it'll be worth it!
Trainspotting Live is at The Vaults until June 3rd before heading to New York.

In Conversation With... Natasha Langridge | In Memory of Leaves | Interview
Following on from Memoirs of a Tree, Natasha Langridge returns with, In Memory of Leaves. This monologue describes Natasha’s experience living in a block of flats on the Portobello Road council estate, which is being torn down by developers, and how all of her surroundings and green spaces are rapidly changing. The monologue also explores her work in Calais with the Occupy movement and the sadness people feel when they have to say goodbye to "home".
Did you grow up writing or was there something or someone which inspired you to write?
I’ve always written but I never showed anyone until after I’d started acting. I loved interpreting other writers work but I found that I had something to say too so I took my courage and showed my own work to other writer friends who, luckily, encouraged me to get it out there.
As well as writing, you perform and direct. How do you juggle each string to your bow and how do you smoothly transition from one to another?
I’ve got a very nice hat for each job and I look forward to wearing each one. I’m not sure I do anything smoothly except drinking wine.
Have you got any other quirky, hidden passions you’d like to pursue?
I went on a sailing trip recently. On an old Thames Sailing Barge .The main mast was 70ft high. I watched the mate climb the rigging. I helped unfurl the sail. I learnt how to tie a bowline knot. I helped steer the ship. I watched the moon rise up over the sea. I quite fancy being a pirate.
What’s your writing setup like? Do you have a certain playlist or drink you always have with you?
My vape. I move around to different places in my flat with my laptop. Or I sit on the floor with huge amounts of scrunched up paper strewn around me. Writing is terrifying. Like walking a tightrope.
In Memory of Leaves is extremely personal, did you feel a sense of pressure putting such an important story out into the world?
I felt a sense of compulsion. I’d just seen a beautiful park beneath my window massacred and felt I had to write about it and then shout about it. I am bearing witness to the ‘regeneration’ of my estate and of London and I have to tell its story-or my part in that story.
What’s the number one message you want people to take away from the show?
Live. From your heart. Speak out against injustice. We are living in a world run by psychopaths. We are living in a society based on a psychopathic model. Do whatever you can to protect love, all life and community.
Finally, what’s your number one piece of advice for anyone hoping to get into the performing industry, be it writing, performing, directing or anything else?
Do it. Don’t wait for anyone else. Or for the phone to ring. Get some good training and make your own work.

Alice's Adventures Underground at The Vaults underneath Waterloo station is not just a show, it's an experience. An experience which everyone should have. It's magical, mystical, unique and altogether brilliant.
Based on the books by Lewis Carroll, we travel around the whimsical Wonderland meeting a variety of characters in a number of different, fantastically designed locations. The great thing about this event is that it's always different and everyone's experience is completely unique. Depending on your choices, you follow varying routes and the multiple casts and audience members mean that everything is always different.
Upon entering Wonderland, we're ushered into a room filled with photos, chandeliers, dusty books and of course, a looking glass. A blonde haired, blue eyed girl appears and seems to have forgotten who she is, asking "who am I?" before disappearing and leading the way for our adventure to begin.
The excitement can be felt in the room as we are taken to make our first decision of the night: 'eat me' or 'drink me'. This determines which path we will take, and with 24 adventures happening at the same time, it's basically impossible to be part of the same show twice. We're given a playing card and split into suits who are each led by a performer who guides us madly through the labyrinth of wonderland.
The impressive thing about this immersive experience is how seamless it is. Not a beat is missed and each moment is so well planned that nothing is clumsy or rushed. It's mind-blowing how slick it is. The characters are crazy and mad but performed perfectly, I particularly loved Zara Plessard as the Queen of Hearts. I don't want to give too much away about the characters and story because not everyone sees them all and it's definitely best to go into this without any preconceptions but every moment is truly brilliant and the its honestly does get curiouser and curiouser at every turn.
If you get the chance to go to this magic underground then please do! You're guaranteed a theatrical experience like no other, it's bewildering, breathtaking, beautiful and an absolute must-see.
