The Impossible Man Musical Honouring Houdini to Debut with Exclusive Previews on Lake Como in Spring 2025

In an enchanting new musical tribute to Harry Houdini, The Impossible Man will bring the legendary illusionist to life with special previews on Lake Como, Italy, in Spring 2025. Portrayed by Broadway star and Drama Desk nominee Ryan Silverman, Houdini’s story will unfold with over 20 dazzling stage illusions, including some that have never before been seen onstage. This exciting announcement coincides with October 31, 2024, marking 98 years since Houdini's passing.

Silverman, known for his performances in Broadway hits like The Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, and Side Show, will capture Houdini’s world-renowned charisma and stage mastery. Reflecting on his role, Silverman shared:

Playing Houdini will be a challenge I’m thrilled to take on, and with such a respected creative team, I’m beyond excited to jump into the world of The Impossible Man!”

Under the direction of Federico Bellone, who recently helmed Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, The Impossible Man promises a bold narrative style inspired by modern television, shifting between Houdini’s final day in 1926 and pivotal moments from his past. This unique approach invites audiences to explore both Houdini’s fame and personal trials, all set against a Broadway-inspired score composed by Giovanni Maria Lori, who has drawn influence from Houdini's Hungarian roots.

Magic designer Paolo Carta (known for Mary Poppins, Ghost, and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory in Europe) will be creating a range of awe-inspiring illusions, including a reimagining of Houdini's Chinese Water Torture Cell and the stage appearance of an elephant. The impressive choreography, led by Gillian Bruce, will add another layer to the production’s dynamic performances.

With its prestigious Lake Como setting for previews at Sociale Theatre and a full international debut to be announced later in the year, The Impossible Man promises to be a memorable tribute to Houdini, celebrating his life and magic like never before.

Jesus Christ Superstar on Tour is an Electrifying Experience | New Victoria Theatre Woking | Review

Jesus Christ Superstar (Tour)
New Victoria Theatre

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the current UK tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, and it was a nearly perfect theatrical experience. From the moment the curtain rose, I could tell this production was something special. Having seen it previously at the Barbican Centre, I knew what to expect but I was really pleasantly surprised with how well the production has translated for touring.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's show, a rock-opera-musical has one of the most intricate and powerful scores I've personally experienced in the theatre. The vocal demands from every performer, whether the high as mountains soprano tracks or the booming bass of Caiaphas, every role requires strength, integrity and control which this cast deliver in spades. Alternate in the role, Charlie McCullagh's portrayal of Jesus is astounding. Taking on the role with the quiet swagger of a popstar, it's evident why he'd garner a following and his kind, charismatic persona, makes his eventual crucifixion incredibly moving and powerful. Vocally, you cannot fault his performance, (his Gethsemane is firmly in my top performances of 2024) every single note is supported and intentionally performed and the emotion imbued into each moment is magnetic to watch. Shem Omari James' Judas is equally compelling, delivering a nuanced and passionate performance that adds layers to the character and leave you questioning his motives long after the curtain goes down. The chemistry between the two leads is palpable, making their dynamic and relationship both riveting and heartbreaking. Hannah Richardson completes the trio perfectly, bringing a tenderness to Mary almost acting as a mediator throughout. Her voice is soulful and she really made the iconic songs feel new and refreshed.

Musically, the production is outstanding. The orchestra deliver Andrew Lloyd Webber's iconic score with vibrant intensity. The contemporary rock-infused arrangements breathe new life into the familiar tunes while still honouring the original spirit of the musical. This is an incredibly well-oiled machine of a show that seems to have paid meticulous attention to making every single moment hit with astounding intensity.

Visually, the show is a feast for the eyes. Tom Scutt's set design is innovative, using modern elements to create a versatile and dynamic stage, without the need for any huge set changes. Equally, his costumes, blending traditional and modern styles, are simplistically striking and allow for some really interesting moments, especially towards the end when some characters literally get Jesus' blood on their hands and bodies. One of my favourite elements of the musical is Lee Curran's lighting which is continually awe inspiring as it enhances dramatic moments and add a layer of symbolism that beautifully complements the narrative. Whilst I don't always understand the meaning of Drew McOnie's choreography, I find it incredibly arresting and love the frenetic energy that it brings to the stage.

The only minor drawback for me, is the occasionally overpowering sound mix. At times, the balance between the orchestra and the vocalists is off, making it difficult to catch all of Tim Rice's intense and often witty lyrics. However, this was a small blemish on an otherwise stellar production.

In my opinion, this touring version of the classic show is a must-see. It’s a masterful revival that pays homage to the original while bringing a fresh and contemporary twist. Whether you're a long-time fan of the musical or experiencing it for the first time, this production is sure to leave a lasting impression. Impeccably performed, it's one of the most moving and powerful shows I've seen this year and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium review: A Delightfully Nostalgic Experience

a visual spectacle that fits so well with the whimsical and well-loved world of Oz"

The Wizard of Oz
London Palladium
★★★★

Magic, wonder, and unforgettable melodies reign supreme as you step into the mesmerising world of The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium. This enchanting production, a transfer from the Leicester Curve, weaves a delightful experience that is sure to captivate audiences of all ages.

Thanks to Nikolai Foster’s direction, once the curtain rises you will find yourself immersed in a world of imagination and fantasy. The detailed costumes, effective sets and strong video effects seamlessly blend together to create a visual spectacle that fits so well with the whimsical and well-loved world of Oz. The semi-modern, steampunk aesthetic lends a unique twist to the classic tale, infusing it with a fresh and vibrant energy.

The cast of The Wizard of Oz delivers exceptional performances, breathing life into the beloved characters with charm and charisma. Dorothy, portrayed by the stunning Georgina Onuorah with innocence and determination, effortlessly captures our hearts as she embarks on her journey to find her way back home. Joining Dorothy on yellow brick road are three iconic friends she makes. Searching for courage, the Cowardly Lion is played superbly well by Jason Manford, who is perfectly evocative of Lahr in the film but with a spin of his own that really works. Looking for a heart the Tin Man is oiled by well by Ashley Banjo who creates some really brilliant moments; the vocals aren’t as stellar as they could be but his dance skills and charisma more than make up for it. Completing the quad is Louis Gaunt as the Scarecrow searching for a heart, who is utterly charming and a real triple threat. The chemistry between the group is well portrayed, however on stage you don’t feel as a strong of a connection to their journey and never root for them quite enough; their story is enjoyable but not as emotionally intense as it could be.

The other supporting cast members shine in their respective roles, each bringing their own unique flair and personality to the story. Christina Bianco’s Glinda and Dianne Pilkington’s Wicked Witch of the West are throughly entertaining, if a little underdeveloped but both provide some of the stand solos of the show. The musical numbers in The Wizard of Oz combine Andrew Lloyd Webber's new compositions with the beloved songs from the classic film and while Webber's additions may not steal the spotlight, they seamlessly blend with the original score, enriching the overall experience. The familiar melodies of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’ undoubtedly take centre stage, evoking a wave of nostalgia and bringing smiles to the faces of the audience.

This musical really does exactly what you’d expect it to in telling the story which so many love. All the classic moments are featured and there are also some fun things to spot such as Ozified show names (West Witch Story, Margaret Hamilton etc…) a hidden Olaf and some swanky costumes which are truly Ozian. However, act two is a little bit lacking as a whole, with the video aspect which is so effective in act one, becoming gimmicky and a little basic, especially when showing the wicked witch’s army and the flying monkeys. Moments which could have been really awe-inspiring are instead brushed over and there’s never a true wow moment.

A way the production does soar is in how it pays heartfelt homage to the original book by Frank L. Baum, incorporating references that will surely delight fans. The inclusion of Dorothy's return to Kansas in her Oz dress adds a touch of nostalgia, serving as a loving nod to the source material. These thoughtful gestures elevate the production, reminding us of the timeless charm that made the story a classic in the first place.

It’s not a faultless show but The Wizard of Oz offers a delightful escape into a world of fantasy and adventure. With its talented cast, striking visuals, and heartfelt nods to the original, this production is well worth seeing. Whether you are reliving cherished childhood memories or experiencing the magic for the very first time, this show will transport you to a place where dreams come true and a trip to Oz should definitely be part of your summer plans.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Tour), New Victoria Theatre | Review

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
New Victoria Theatre
Reviewed on Wednesday 3rd August 2022 by Olivia Mitchell
★★★★★

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a staple and rite of passage for many musical theatre fans so when a production is mounted there's always a ready and willing audience to view it. Thankfully for current audiences, the Palladium production which is touring the country is absolutely top notch and a dream night out.

Laurence Connor's version of Joseph is a reinvigorated, large scale, glitzy production that feels like it's been plucked straight from the West End and dropped into Woking. The excellent sets by Morgan Large look luxurious but there's also a lovely element of simplicity which is reminiscent of the hugely popular film version. The entire set design is sleek and perfectly embodies the joy and energy which this show provides.

If you're looking for a killer cast, you need to look no further than Joseph. Every single cast member fires on all cylinders and the power and joy which pours out from the stage is just a treat to experience. In the lead role Jac Yarrow is star quality embodied. His Close Every Door To Me is absolutely excellent and he brings a lovely cheeky quality which draws you to Joseph and makes you root for him even more.

Yarrow is joined by Linzi Hately who is wonderfully witty as The Narrator as well as Bobby Windebank who gives a brilliant portrayal of the Elvis-esque Pharaoh. Mention must also go to Matt Gibson as Rueben and Will Hawsworth as Simeon, both of whom are real standouts vocally in their solo moments. The child performers are a joy to watch as they take on various roles and exude happiness.

This is also a choreography heavy production which further elevates it. There are tap numbers alongside a string of high intensity ensemble moments. Joann M. Hunter has done an outstanding job of providing an array of styles and making every number engaging.

For a show which could easily become pantomimic, there is a real level of intensity which upgrades it and makes it a two hour treat that you'd have to be a scrooge not to enjoy.  The outstanding band led by the joyous musical director John Rigby, alongside the super strong ensemble and superbly adapted show, mean and you can't help but leave the theatre smiling from ear to ear.
