Initial West End Casting Announced for Clueless the Musical

Exciting news for fans of Clueless- the beloved ’90s classic is coming to the West End stage in a fresh new musical adaptation! Emma Flynn (Beautiful, Little Shop of Horrors) will make her West End debut in the iconic role of Cher Horowitz, joined by Keelan McAuley (Heathers, Grease) as Josh. Both actors are thrilled to breathe new life into these characters, with Flynn sharing her excitement to continue Alicia Silverstone’s legacy, saying:

I can’t wait for audiences to rediscover Cher’s wit and heart in a whole new way.”

Meanwhile, McAuley looks forward to channeling the charm of Paul Rudd’s original Josh, especially as he brings a new musical twist to the role.

Fans can already get a taste of the musical's vibe with the release of 'New Girl', a track featuring Flynn alongside KT Tunstall, who composed the original score. Tunstall, known for her hit songs 'Suddenly I See' and 'Black Horse and the Cherry Tree', collaborated with three-time Tony Award nominee Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid, Sister Act) to bring a contemporary, ’90s-inspired sound to the West End. Together, they capture the upbeat, fun-loving spirit of the original film with a fresh score that combines nostalgic ’90s pop with today’s musical stylings.

Amy Heckerling, the original writer-director of Clueless, is thrilled to see her characters return to the spotlight, noting:

I’m thrilled for Emma to bring her own take on Cher’s unforgettable charm and Keelan to make Josh his own.”

This production is directed by Rachel Kavanaugh (Chichester Festival Theatre, Regent’s Park Open Air) and choreographed by Olivier Award winner Kelly Devine (Come From Away), making it a high-energy show packed with humour, iconic fashion, and plenty of heart.

Set in Beverly Hills High, Clueless The Musical brings audiences back to the world of Cher, a matchmaking fashionista who’s trying to help her new friend Tai fit in with the cool crowd. But when her own world starts to get a little complicated, Cher finds herself on an unexpected journey of self-discovery. With its fun plot, memorable characters, and catchy tunes, Clueless promises to be a majorly cool addition to the West End.

13 Going on 30 - The Musical Premieres in Manchester in 2025!

Get ready to be swept back into the whimsical world of 13 Going on 30 as it transforms from beloved rom-com to musical in a world premiere at Manchester Opera House. This limited season debut kicks off on September 21st, 2025, and promises a nostalgic, magical experience for fans and newcomers alike. Based on the 2004 hit starring Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo, 13 Going on 30- The Musical is written by the original film’s writers, Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, and directed by award-winning Andy Fickman (Heathers, She’s The Man). Goldsmith and Yuspa have crafted a fresh adaptation for the stage, working alongside songwriters Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary (First Date, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) to give Jenna Rink’s story a new dimension.

The story follows 13-year-old Jenna, a quirky, awkward middle schooler who feels trapped in the struggles of high school social life. When she wishes to skip ahead to adulthood, Jenna magically wakes up “thirty, flirty, and thriving” with the glamorous job of editor at a high-end fashion magazine. But adulthood proves to be more complex than she imagined, and as Jenna uncovers the life she’s built, she goes on a journey of self-discovery, realizing what- and who- she left behind. With its signature mix of comedy, romance, and heart, 13 Going on 30 explores timeless themes of friendship, identity, and staying true to yourself, making it perfect for a new generation to experience on stage.

Goldsmith and Yuspa, who also wrote the musical’s book, are thrilled to revisit the story, marking the 20th anniversary of the original film. They shared their excitement, saying:

When we wrote the movie 13 Going on 30, we never dreamt that on the film’s 20th anniversary, we’d get the chance to see a whole new generation fall in love with Razzles and feel thirty, flirty, and thriving. It’s been a joy to work with ROYO, Revolution Studios, songwriters Alan Zachary & Michael Weiner, and director Andy Fickman to bring this story to life as a stage musical. We were thrilled by the audience’s response to our workshop last year, and now we can’t wait to officially open in Manchester at the legendary Opera House- the launchpad of so many iconic musicals. So bring your family, your friends, maybe a date, or just come alone- don’t be shy, we’re all nice. Hope you have as much fun seeing the show as we had making it!”

Jay Bryce on Taking Heathers on the Road | Heathers the Musical | Interview

Heathers is currently making its way around the country, on a high octane, 80s fuelled tour. Currently playing Veronica's Dad/Principal Gowan/Kurt's Dad, Jay Bryce tells us about his experience taking the show on the road and what it's like being part of a show with such a cult following...

How does it feel to be starring in such an iconic and well-loved show?
It feels such a privilege to be part of this great show and part of the Heathers Family. I’m so grateful to be working on this production. I didn’t realise the reach the show had until I joined and how much the show means to people. It is so heart-warming to be bringing this show to people around the UK and Ireland.

Which Heather would you most like to be friends with?
Definitely Heather Mac. I think she needs a good friend to look out for her and I think I could help bring out her kinder side. Plus, I’d want to get a yellow blazer to match with her.

Heathers has a really dedicated fan base, what are some of your favourite fan experiences from the tour so far?
Meeting the fans at stage door is always such a great experience. The Heathers fans are all so kind and lovely and we’ve been made to feel so welcome in the venues we’ve been to so far.

Something I’ve also LOVED is the scrunchy throw during the bows. It is so lovely and something that makes the show so unique.

What's your favourite line in Heathers?
I’m a big fan of my characters line “That was one hell of a fishing trip”. But I do love it when Veronica tells Heather Chandler to “Lick it up”. Definitely have been saying that in my everyday life now…!

Heather C is a big corn nut fan, what would your show snack of choice be?
I would love a Werther’s Original. Is that showing my age…?!

If you could bring any other film to stage, which would you choose?
I think American Pie on the stage would be absolutely brilliant. I’d love to play Jim. But I think my casting is now heading more towards playing Jim’s Dad…!

Why should people come and see Heathers on tour?
The show is just brilliant. It has energy, is fun, whilst also dealing with serious themes. Working with this cast has been such a joy and their energy and joy on and off stage is infectious.

You’ll want to come again and again to see this show.

Five Reasons to see Heathers the Musical on Tour

Since making its London debut in 2018, Heathers the Musical has gained a massive cult following and has gone on to do a number of London runs and touring productions. This current version takes the iconic show around the UK and features a fantastic cast who absolutely nail the roles. If you're still debating whether you should catch the show on tour, here are five reasons why we think you should...

The Soundtrack is Super Catchy
Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe’s book, music and lyrics have so many witty moments where you'll be laughing out loud and there are also some genuinely touching moments. The music is engaging and camp with so much 80s realness woven throughout. If you're remotely stagey, you've probably heard some of the songs, most likely Candy Store which is a definite stand out of the show. Aside from the humourous songs there are some very heartfelt moments like Kindergarten Boyfriend, a beautiful soliloquy performed by Martha aka Kingsley Morton, and some definite earworms such as Seventeen and Shine a Light.

The Cast are SO Talented
This touring cast are one of the strongest I've seen in Heathers with a number of standout performances and some great ensemble work. As Veronica Sawyer, Jenna Innes gives a really well developed performance and feels vocally strong throughout. Her chemistry with the brooding serial killer JD (Jacob Fowler) is pretty strong and the duo really shine in their moments together, especially when the drama really gets going. The Heathers themselves bring all the farce and sass you'd expect. Elise Zavou is enjoyable as Duke, Verity Thompson is hilarious and vocally dreamy as Chandler and Billie Bowman really highlights the reluctance of McNamara to go along with her 'friends' and gives a surprisingly nuanced and emotive performance, not always seen in Heathers.

The Production Value is Really Strong
This is a show which transfers so effectively to touring, David Shields' 80s design is bright and engaging whilst Ben Cracknell's lighting is super effective, especially when highlighting the cast in their signature colours. The fairly simple set is elevated by a number of special effects and costume quick changes, all of which really feel at home on a touring stage. The slow mo fight scene and clever sound effects (Dan Samson) for the croquet game work really well too, and the ensemble do so much to really embellish all the scenes, with individual characteristics and storylines shining through and adding a lot of interest.

It's Melodrama at its Finest
Whilst Heathers touches on some really sensitive topics, it does so in a way that is hilariously over the top. It's camp and angsty at the same time. With deep moments suddenly balanced with a gag; the more times I see this show, the more effective I think it is. Kurt Kelly (Alex Woodward) and Ram Sweeney (Morgan Jackson) are peak hilarity in their portrayals and really lean into the teen humour of the piece. The whole shebang, with the ott choreography and character entrances make the whole thing so dramatic you cant help but enjoy it. Once you get over the slight cringe of it all, it's a really fun night out!

The Audience Atmosphere Needs to be Experienced
Heathers is an absolute crowd pleaser that has made and retained so many fans over its time and the way these fans love and support the show is truly lovely to experience. Cheering and whooping as if their family members are on stage, the audience appreciation is so real and makes for a really warm feeling theatrical experience.

The brand-new musical, come gig, come ballet is from some of the most exciting figures in modern British Theatre, with an Olivier Award winning creative team including Olivier Winner’s Drew McOnie(In the Heights; Jesus Chris Superstar) and Morgan Lloyd Malcolm (Emilia - The Globe)

Cake will be venturing on a UK tour from 18 March 2023, starting at the MAST Mayflower Studios, Southampton.

Casting will include, fresh from her magical run as Mary Poppins on the West End, Zizi Strallen (she/her) stars as Marie Antoinette, with Renée Lamb (she/her), Catherine of Aragon from the original cast of SIX, starring as Jeanne.

The cast is completed by B Terry (they/them) as Nicole, Travis Ross (he/him) as Cardinal with Ope Sowande (he/him) and Megan Bryony Gibbs (she/her) as the ensemble and Lukas Hunt (he/him) and Amie Hibbert (she/her) as swings.

I first commissioned this at The Other Palace five years ago and am delighted to be working with some of the best theatre makers in Drew McOnie, Morgan Lloyd Malcolm, Tasha Taylor Johnson and Jack McManus. The show started life at our first MTFestUK and it’s great to see it come to production.”
