Everything You Could Ask For in a Panto: Sleeping Beauty at the New Victoria Theatre REVIEW

The New Victoria Theatre’s Sleeping Beauty was a beautifully crafted production with amazing scenery, atmospheric lighting and flamboyant costumes; it was everything you want a panto to be. From the playful delightful Royal magician (Richard Cadell), Spirit of Dreams Dame played by the national treasure himself Christopher Biggins, to the wicked Evil Sorceress Carabosse delivered by the talented Faye Tozer, everything was wonderful.

To hear the adult’s laughter and the children’s screams of delight was a jubilant piece of escapism from a very grey world of doom and gloom. All the cast were fantastic in their differing roles and together, they transformed the theatre into a magical sanctuary of joy and fun for everyone. It was funny throughout with hilarious one liners that didn’t veer into political territory as is sometimes the case. Instead it focussed more on colloquialism of the local towns and surrounding areas of Woking and general life experiences, which were really effective and brought the audience to tears of laughter. Particular mention must go to the inventive stage design and special effects; the 3D scenes with the helicopter and the dragon were so effective, they had the front rows cowering!

Another real hit with the audience was Sooty accompanied by Sweep and SOO, it certainly transported me back to being a young child and loving that little puppet so much that you begin to believe that they are real, well aren't they? Special mention of course must go to Richard Cadell as Muddles and Faye Tozer as Carabosse. Muddles really galvanized the plot together with brilliant funny one liners, his magical illusions, excellent timing and great engagement with the audience. Tozer as Carabosse made an excellent villain and to be honest was not a role I had thought would naturally suit Faye, but how wrong was I. She delivered  both excellent acting and singing- a perfect Panto villain. The rest of the cast equally delivered solid performances. Prince William made a great leading man with a Bridgerton air around his persona and a great singing voice, with both the King and Queen delivering a majestic and humorous performance, Princess Aurora, as the love sick princess being completely oblivious of Muddles’ crush on her and his feelings. With Christoper Biggins delivering a masterclass of being a Panto Dame, as the spirit of dreams whilst precariously hanging in the air above the stage.

I left the theatre in a much happier place after seeing the Pantomime, it made me vow to myself that I would make a promise to upkeep the British tradition of of going every year, after not going to for such a long time. I left the theatre with ringing in my ears of cries of delight "look behind you", "I feel good", "Oh no you don't "and "Goodbye Biggins " and with the whole audience dancing to ‘Tragedy’. In summary- I absolutely loved it!

If you want a feel good feeling, sprinkled with a festive fairy dusting of humour and fun, then Sleeping Beauty is the panto for you!  A definite 10/10!

Join Maddie Moate’s Very Curious Christmas: A Festive Science Adventure Live in London’s West End


Beloved children's presenter and science enthusiast Maddie Moate brings the holiday season to life with her brand-new stage show, Maddie Moate’s Very Curious Christmas, arriving at London’s Apollo Theatre from 6th December, 2024, to 4th January, 2025. This interactive, science-themed Christmas adventure is filled with festive fun, magic, and plenty of audience participation. Featuring Maddie’s signature blend of science and storytelling, the show dives into the wonders of winter, exploring where snow comes from, why Christmas crackers bang, and yes- why Brussels sprouts might make you fart!

This immersive holiday event introduces audiences to Santa’s bustling workshop, led by Maddie herself with a cast of quirky characters. Joining her on stage are West End newcomers Kira MacCarter as Tinker and Zain Abrahams as Goggles, bringing new talent to the magic of Christmas. CBeebies star Jennie Dale, known for her role as Captain Captain on Swashbuckle, will appear virtually as Mrs. Claus, adding a familiar face for young fans. Maddie shares her excitement about the production, saying:

This latest production highlights Maddie’s journey from a BAFTA-winning presenter to a digital science sensation. Known for her curiosity-driven content on her YouTube channel (which was awarded Kidscreen’s Best Kids Channel in 2022), Maddie has shared her passion for science through multiple digital series and has produced and hosted live events across the UK, including The Wonder Games and a CBeebies adaptation of Twelfth Night at Shakespeare’s Globe. She has also been a staple of CBeebies’ Christmas Show since 2017 and appeared at the Royal Albert Hall for the CBeebies Prom in 2024.

In addition to her work on screen and stage, Maddie is a dedicated author, with her latest book, A Very Curious Christmas, now available in paperback. Her work continues to inspire a love for science and nature in children and families across the world, supported by her roles as a patron for the Youth STEM Awards and an ambassador for both The Wildlife Trust and Eureka: The National Children’s Museum.

Matthew Bourne's Award-Winning The Midnight Bell Returns for a Nationwide Tour in 2025


New Adventures is thrilled to announce the return of Matthew Bourne's critically acclaimed The Midnight Bell in 2025. The production will open at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham on Thursday, May 15, before embarking on a 17-week tour across the UK, reaching new audiences at many venues for the first time.

Set in 1930s London, The Midnight Bell follows a group of ordinary people whose lives intersect in the pubs and foggy streets of Soho and Fitzrovia. The story unfolds within a tavern where a lonely-hearts club gathers to navigate the emotional complexities of love, longing, and heartbreak. The piece is inspired by the works of English novelist Patrick Hamilton, who captured the lives and struggles of the working-class man and woman in London's pubs, particularly in his novels Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky and Hangover Square.

Premiering in 2021 to widespread acclaim, The Midnight Bell received five nominations at the 2022 National Dance Awards, including wins for Matthew Bourne's Best Modern Choreography and Michela Meazza's Outstanding Female Modern Performance. Bourne reflects on the significance of this piece, which marked New Adventures' return to touring post-pandemic. He expressed his excitement about revisiting the show in 2025 and introducing it to new audiences, describing it as a collaborative masterpiece that explores the fundamental need for human connection.

For this revival, Bourne will reunite with his award-winning creative team, including Terry Davies (music), Lez Brotherston (set and costume design), Paule Constable (lighting design), and Paul Groothuis (sound design). The 2025 tour will feature a cast of fourteen of New Adventures' finest actor-dancers, with full casting to be announced soon. Audiences are invited to step inside The Midnight Bell once more to experience its bittersweet stories of human emotion and connection.

UK Theatre Awards 2024: Winners Announced in Celebration of British Theatre


The winners of the UK Theatre Awards 2024 were unveiled at a celebratory ceremony hosted by Faye Tozer at 8 Northumberland Avenue. These prestigious awards honour the very best of theatre from across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, recognising creative excellence and outstanding work both on and off stage.

With winners representing all four nations, the event highlighted the diversity and strength of the UK theatre industry. Leeds Playhouse’s production of Oliver! led the way with two major wins, including Best Musical Production and Best Performance in a Musical for Jenny Fitzpatrick.

In the On Stage categories, Best Director went to Drew McOnie for The Artist at Theatre Royal Plymouth, while Best Play Revival was awarded to Rhino at Lyric Theatre Belfast. Best New Play went to Swim, Aunty, Swim! from the Belgrade Theatre. The Stephen Joseph Theatre’s production of Beauty And The Beast took home Best Show for Children & Young People, and Achievement in Dance was awarded to Mehek, a co-production by Aakash Odedra Company and Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company. Achievement in Opera went to Welsh National Opera for Death In Venice.

In the acting categories, Best Performance in a Play was awarded to David Shields for Punch at Nottingham Playhouse, and Best Supporting Performance was given to Chumisa Dornford-May for her role in Evita at the Curve Theatre.

Polka Theatre was crowned the UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre, beating out strong competition. Off-stage recognition included Chichester Festival Theatre winning the Excellence in Sustainability Award, and the Excellence in Inclusivity Award going to Antony & Cleopatra at Shakespeare’s Globe.

101 Dalmatians Cast Teams Up with Guide Dogs UK for a Pawsome Charity Event at Woking's New Victoria Theatre
The cast of 101 Dalmatians the Musical, led by Kym Marsh as Cruella de Vil, met real-life guide dogs and puppies in training during a special charity event at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking. The event raised £2,115 for Guide Dogs UK.

Deafinitely Theatre Receives National Lottery Funding for 5 Years of their Youth Programme


Deafinitely Theatre has announced that they have been awarded £273,675 from The National Lottery Community Fund to support their Deafinitely Youth Theatre (DYT) programme over the next five years. Founded in 2010, DYT provides annual opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing young people aged 14-21 to explore their creativity in theatre. Led by industry professionals, the programme has supported over 400 young people through workshops, productions, theatre trips, and mentoring. Notable alumni include actors and creatives like Eloise Pennycott, William Grint, Claire Wetherall, and Strictly Come Dancing champion and DYT Patron Rose Ayling-Ellis MBE.

This significant funding will ensure that DYT can continue to provide free access to their youth theatre development programme, which empowers participants with theatre training, social skills, and confidence. Speaking about the grant, Paula Garfield MBE, Artistic Director of Deafinitely Theatre, said, "We are absolutely thrilled to receive this vital multi-year funding... Our Deafinitely Youth programme has remained the UK’s leading opportunity for deaf young people to explore their creativity, engage with theatre, and showcase their talents."

Deafinitely Youth Theatre is unique in offering fully accessible theatre training to deaf young people. Through residential weeks, theatre skills workshops, work experience placements, and more, DYT helps participants build confidence, explore their creative talents, and develop connections within the deaf community. The programme provides a safe and welcoming environment for young people to discover their artistic potential and develop a sense of deaf identity through theatre.

DYT alumni have spoken highly of their experiences. Eloise Pennycott, who participated in 2019, said: 

They have been wonderfully supportive in my transition into an emerging creative, and it is so heartening to work with a company that puts deafness and sign language at the heart of theatre.

 Current DYT member Jude Powell added:

Deafinitely Youth Theatre has deeply influenced my life, improving my acting skills and confidence... Deafinitely Youth Theatre will always hold a special place in my heart.

New Cast Joins Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Palace Theatre


The producers of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child- Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender, and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions—are thrilled to welcome a new cast that begins performances at the Palace Theatre this week. This acclaimed, multi-award-winning London production continues to enchant audiences, with bookings now open until 29 June 2025.

The new cast features Claire Lams as Ginny Potter, alongside David Ricardo-Pearce reprising his role as Harry Potter and Ellis Rae returning as their son Albus Potter. Eve de Leon Allen will make her debut as Rose Granger-Weasley, daughter of Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, with Thomas Aldridge and Jade Ogugua continuing in their roles as Ron and Hermione, respectively. Steve John Shepherd remains as Draco Malfoy, joined by Harry Acklowe as his son Scorpius Malfoy.

In addition to the core cast, the ensemble includes Ishmail Aaron, David Annen, Nicole-Lily Baisden, Sabina Cameron, Rob Curtis, Zijuan Elsol, Gabriel Fleary, Rory Fraser, Tim Hibberd, Sally Jayne Hind, Max Hunter, Dewayne Jameson Adams, Emma Louise Jones, Julia Kass, Debra Lawrance, Tasha Lim, Matty Loane, Sophie Matthew, Jaden Oshenye, Helen Power, Jocelyn Prah, Conor Quinn, Ian Redford, Catherine Russell, Martin de los Santos, Adam Slynn, Benjamin Stratton, Alex Tomkins, Jake Tuesley, Sam Varley and Katie Wimpenny. Set 19 years after Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s legendary battle against dark forces, this new chapter invites audiences to join them on an extraordinary adventure with a brave new generation arriving at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Spectacular spells, a breathtaking race through time, and an epic showdown against mysterious forces await as the characters grapple with the weight of the future.

Tickets for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child are currently available, with prices starting at £15 per part. The regular performance schedule is Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday—no performance; Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 2 PM for Part One and 7 PM for Part Two; and Sunday at 1 PM for Part One and 6 PM for Part Two. Access performances are scheduled, including an Audio Described show on Saturday, 9 November 2024, and a Captioned Performance on Saturday, 16 November 2024, with more access performances planned for 2025.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the first story from the Harry Potter universe to be adapted for the stage and serves as the eighth story in the series. Now in its ninth year at the Palace Theatre, the production has captivated over 1.7 million people in the West End and over 11 million globally, boasting an impressive collection of 60 major awards, including nine Laurence Olivier Awards and six Tony Awards for Best New Play. Currently, there are five productions running worldwide, including those in New York, Hamburg, and Tokyo. A North American tour began in September at Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre and will move to Los Angeles’ Hollywood Pantages from February to June 2025, before continuing to Washington DC’s Broadway At The National starting on 8 July 2025.

Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is crafted into a play by Jack Thorne, directed by John Tiffany, featuring movement by Steven Hoggett, set design by Christine Jones, and an impressive array of creative talents including Imogen Heap, Neil Austin, and Jamie Harrison. Produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender, and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions, this magical experience continues to be a must-see event for fans of all ages.

Final cast announced for Jack and the Beanstalk: What a Whopper!


The full cast has been revealed for the highly anticipated adult pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk: What a Whopper!, written by Jon Bradfield and Martin Hooper, with songs by Bradfield. Directed by Andrew Beckett, the show will run from 23 November 2024 to 11 January 2025 at Charing Cross Theatre, following the record-breaking success of last year’s Sleeping Beauty Takes A Prick!, which sold over 14,000 tickets and became London’s biggest adults-only pantomime.

Leading the cast is Keanu Adolphus Johnson as the poor, gay, and extremely horny Jack Trott. Johnson, who recently made waves in Backstairs Billy and dazzled audiences in Kinky Boots, brings his vibrant energy to this outrageous role. He’ll be joined by Matthew Baldwin, the reigning “Queen of Adult Panto,” who returns to reprise his role as Dame Dolly Trott, the sharp-tongued, quick-witted matriarch with a heart of gold. Baldwin is renowned for his commanding panto performances, described by critics as “one of the classiest Dames in the business.” Also joining the cast is Chris Lane as Dale, the friendly fairy, and Jordan Stamatiadis as the wickedly lascivious landowner, Lady Fleshcreep.

New faces in the production include Laura Anna-Mead as the lovable Simple Simone, Joe Grundy making his professional debut as Reverend Tim, and ensemble members Laura Buhagiar, Caitlin Swanton, and Fin Walton, who returns after his performance in Sleeping Beauty Takes A Prick!.

The story follows Jack Trott, who lives with his scandalous mother, Dame Dolly, on a dilapidated dairy farm in the quaint Yorkshire village of Upper Bottom. As Jack embarks on his cheeky quest to find something truly “giant,” he must also contend with the evil Lady Fleshcreep, navigate a 10-mile drought of potential Grindr dates, and find hilarity along the way. With its outrageous songs, glittering choreography, fabulous set design by David Shields (winner of Best Set Design at the National Panto Awards), and more innuendos than you can swallow, this panto promises to deliver a night of side-splitting laughter and risqué fun.

The show’s creators, Bradfield and Hooper, are known for their string of acclaimed gay pantomimes, which found a loyal following at the now-closed Above The Stag Theatre. Orange Tree Theatre Announces Exciting 2025 Season Featuring World Premieres and Classic Revivals


Orange Tree Theatre (OT) has announced its highly anticipated 2025 season, packed with a dynamic lineup of six new plays, including four world premieres, two rediscoveries, and a beloved classic comedy. Artistic Director Tom Littler and Executive Director Hanna Streeter have curated a season that blends cutting-edge new writing with timeless stories, exploring powerful themes such as war, power, privilege, and the human condition.

The season launches with Churchill in Moscow, an imagined meeting between Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin in 1942, reuniting playwright Howard Brenton and Littler for their sixth collaboration. The production stars Roger Allam in the titular role and promises to be a standout event. Following this, the theatre will revive April De Angelis’ acclaimed Playhouse Creatures, starring Anna Chancellor and directed by Michael Oakley, before transferring to the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and Theatre Royal Bath. Next, the London premiere of Mark Ravenhill’s Ben and Imo, produced in collaboration with the RSC and directed by Erica Whyman, will feature Samuel Barnett and Victoria Yeates reprising their original roles. The spring season concludes with a revival of Terence Rattigan’s In Praise of Love, directed by Amelia Sears.

The summer and autumn months promise even more excitement with Chiara Atik's Poor Clare, directed by Blanche McIntyre, and world premieres of two eagerly anticipated adaptations: Dance of Death, adapted and directed by Richard Eyre from the play by August Strindberg, and Hedda, a fresh take on Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler by Tanika Gupta. Tom Littler will also helm a special 250th-anniversary production of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s classic comedy The Rivals. Additionally, the OT Young Company will present Alice in Wonderland, a new adaptation by Chinonyerem Odimba based on Lewis Carroll’s iconic novel.

As part of OT's ongoing commitment to engaging younger audiences, the theatre is launching OT Under 30 Nights, offering 18-29-year-olds the chance to see shows for just £15, complete with a post-show talk and a social event. The inaugural event will take place on 8 November, featuring the JMK Award-winning production Guards at the Taj. Cast members Usaamah Ibraheem Hussain and Maanuv Thiara will participate in the post-show panel, alongside creatives Roisin Jenner and Priya Virdee, with the discussion chaired by Kalungi Ssebandeke, the 2023 JMK award winner.

In addition to the main stage programming, the OT’s Community team will continue their work with young people, offering educational performances of Julius Caesar and Romeo & Juliet for primary and secondary school audiences, as well as participation in the National Theatre’s Connections festival for teenagers.

Priority booking for Churchill in Moscow, Playhouse Creatures, Ben and Imo, and In Praise of Love opens on 16 October, with general sales starting on 28 October. On-sale dates for the rest of the season will be announced soon.

Ncuti Gatwa and Sharon D. Clarke Lead The Importance of Being Earnest at the National Theatre


The National Theatre has announced the complete cast for its highly anticipated revival of Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest. Directed by Max Webster, this production marks his debut at the National Theatre and is set to run at the Lyttelton Theatre from November 20, 2024, to January 25, 2025.

The stellar cast features Sharon D Clarke as the formidable Lady Bracknell, Ncuti Gatwa as the charming Algernon Moncrieff, and Hugh Skinner as the earnest Jack Worthing. Ronkẹ Adékọluẹ́jọ́ will portray Gwendolen Fairfax, while Eliza Scanlen takes on the role of Cecily Cardew. The cast is rounded out by Richard Cant as Reverend Canon Chasuble, Amanda Lawrence as Miss Prism, and Julian Bleach as Merriman/Lane.

Joining this impressive lineup are ensemble members Shereener Browne (The Effect), Jasmine Kerr (Follies), Gillian McCafferty (The Rise and Fall of Little Voice), Elliot Pritchard (Museum of Austerity), and John Vernon (Coriolanus).

This production will also be filmed live for a worldwide cinema release starting February 20, 2025. The creative team behind this revival includes set and costume designer Rae Smith, lighting designer Jon Clark, and sound designer Nicola T. Chang. Other members of the creative team include movement director Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, composer DJ Walde, and intimacy coordinator Ingrid Mackinnon.

Hadestown at the Lyric Theatre REVIEW: A Soul-Stirring Journey to the Depths of Hell

There are musicals that touch your soul and for me that’s Hadestown. I first saw the show in 2018, where I went in completely blind and came out gob smacked and awed. Tonight after the official West End opening night, I feel equally awed as well as inspired, moved, astounded, heartbroken and overjoyed. There really aren’t adjectives to describe how heartfelt and special this show is. Not only is it a piece of fantastic quality theatre but it’s also a poem, a concert, a celebration of life and humanity, an ode to music and above all, a love story.

Hadestown tells the tale of young Orpheus and Eurydice as their tales intertwine. It's a musical retelling of the ancient Greek myth of the duo and follows the journey of Orpheus as he descends into the underworld, determined to rescue his beloved Eurydice from the clutches of the charismatic but menacing Hades. Despite the various iterations and productions this musical has gone through, one constant is how scarily relevant the themes it explores feel in our modern world. Hades, ruler of the underworld and the mines, ostensibly grants "freedom" through employment while simultaneously confining his subjects behind a barrier. Why We Build The Wall is certainly one of the most pertinent songs of the production, its relevance hits all too close to home in the current world.

The musical borders the line between acting as "the world we live in, and the one we dream about", in thanks part to Rachel Hauck's set. Scaled down slightly from the National Theatre production, it still evokes Depression-era vibes and cleverly frames the story. Bradley King's lighting literally highlights some of the most astounding moments of the show, especially during Hades' peak moments, as well as casting shadows to create an almost cinematic feel; overall it's just an incredibly cohesive show that has a vibe and aesthetic that matches it so well.

This undefined world is perhaps best showcased by Anaïs Mitchell's incredible score which combines so many styles a creates such special storytelling. The intricate lyrics allow layers upon layers of emotions to form as Anaïs weaves a musical tapestry that is charming and delightful at times, but gritty and painful at others. Mitchell has truly crafted a musical masterpiece that transcends time and genre and creates a theatrical experience like no other.

Director Rachel Chavkin has meticulously pored over each performer, set element, musician, and lighting effect to craft a production that leaves us suspended between despair and hope. This version of the show also feels perfectly tweaked for the West End, with the use of the performer’s natural accents making the whole thing feel very real and grounded, an inspired change! David Neumann's precise choreography fits seamlessly with the revolving stage, continually moving between frenetic energy and poignant stillness that works so well. This is a piece which is so reliant on balance, the balance between good and bad, love and hate, light and dark, loud and quiet, beauty and pain, among others, and the entire cast and creative team have perfectly understood and managed this balance to form a musical that leaves you not quite sure what emotion you're experiencing, but 100% sure you experienced something special.

At it's core this is a story about people, and the people who lead it are wonderful. As the headstrong Eurydice, Grace Hodgett Young is everything you could ask for in a leading lady, her calm is as strong as her passion and she fills every moment with charisma. There’s often mention of “stage presence” but it’s rare you see the phrase as outwardly displayed as with Grace who commands even the smallest of moments. Of course she’s also vocally dreamy, showcasing all layers of her voice and perfectly bringing the vocal grit that’s so necessary for the role. Her easy swagger and playfulness is a perfect balance to Orepheus' more nervous persona. Taking on the role of this heartstrong counterpart, Donal Finn is delightfully whimsical and charming. Donal's Orpheus truly comes into his own during act two when his passion for his partner and also his music are on full display and his voice becomes a beacon of hope cutting through the darkness of despair. It's utterly heartbreaking when we reach the expected conclusion, a testament to the emotion the cast pour out to get us to that point.

As the enigmatic Hermes, Melanie La Barrie is all parts wonderful, her presence commanding the stage with every word and gesture and bringing humour and gravitas in equal measure. Her performance weaves together the threads of myth and legend with an all knowing wisdom that seems to transcend time, she truly gives everything on stage and is a marvel to behold.

Hadestown is more than a musical—it's an experience, a testament to the enduring power of art to touch the very depths of our souls. It's a rare gem that shines brightly in the landscape of contemporary theatre, a reminder that sometimes, even in the darkest of times, there is still beauty to be found.

In the hallowed halls of the Lyric Theatre, you can bear witness to something truly extraordinary. Hadestown is a triumph in every sense of the word and it needs to be seen.

War House to Embark on New UK Tour


The acclaimed War Horse production, adapted from Michael Morpurgo's beloved novel and originally directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, is set to embark on an extensive 18-month UK Tour starting from September 5, 2024, and continuing until 2026.
 
Opening at the New Wimbledon Theatre from September 5 to 14, the tour will then move to various venues including The Lowry in Salford (September 18 to 28), Mayflower Theatre in Southampton (October 8 to 19), The Marlowe in Canterbury (October 22 to November 2), Sunderland Empire (November 5 to 16), Theatre Royal Plymouth (November 26 to December 7), and New Theatre Oxford (December 10, 2024, to January 4, 2025), with additional dates and locations to be announced.

This captivating story follows young Albert and his horse Joey against the backdrop of World War I. War Horse, celebrated for its innovative puppetry by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, has garnered more than 25 major awards and has been witnessed by over 8.3 million people globally. Co-produced by Michael Harrison, Fiery Angel, and Playing Field, this new tour promises to deliver the same awe-inspiring experience.

Led by Tom Morris and revival director Katie Henry, with redesigned sets by Rae Smith and additional music by Adrian Sutton, the production features puppetry by Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler, lighting design by Rob Casey, and movement choreography by Toby Sedgwick. Animation and projection design are by Nicol Scott, while John Tams provides musical contributions and Christopher Shutt manages sound design. Casting details are yet to be announced.

Having premiered at the National Theatre in 2007, War Horse has since captivated audiences worldwide, with productions spanning across continents. Dear England at the Prince Edward Theatre review: An Ode to the Nation

It could be argued that James Graham is the master of creating works which capture the intricate fabric of contemporary Britain, and his most recent opening, Dear England does just that, emerging as a heartfelt, thought-provoking piece. This engaging production eloquently delves into British identity, the echoes of history, dreams for the future, and the nation's relationship to football.

Dear England artfully blends past and present, transporting audiences through time in a seamless and captivating manner. This storytelling technique offers a unique lens through which we can view the profound influence of history on our present. The play focusses on Gareth Southgate's journey as manager of the England football team, linking in his own personal history, as well as the histories of his team and England as a whole. It's a very cleverly done show which feels completely relevant, modern and necessary.

The characters, portrayed by a talented ensemble cast, come alive with vibrant, authentic performances. These characters represent a rich tapestry of contemporary Britain, showcasing immigrants, soldiers, activists, and politicians. Joseph Fiennes outstandingly leads the show as Gareth and helps to cultivate the entire cast's emotional depth, forging a genuine connection between the characters and the audience. 

Es Devlin's set design is typically National Theatre and incredibly well done, seamlessly transporting us from one time to another. The use of multimedia elements, including videos, adds depth and texture to the storytelling. With each shift in the backdrop, the mood and ambiance evolve, underscoring the diversity and complexity of the themes explored.

Graham's writing is sharp and insightful, with sprinkles of humour throughout to balance the gravity of the themes. Dear England explores national identity, migration, patriotism, and the ever-relevant question of what it truly means to be British. The dialogue is simultaneously poetic and genuine, prompting the audience to reflect on their own connection to the nation.

It's fair to mention that the play occasionally teeters on the edge of trying a bit too hard, with the odd scene not being as impactful as you'd hope. Nevertheless, this is a small price to pay for a production that aims to encapsulate the very essence of a nation and overall Dear England is a touching and timely exploration of the British identity. It masterfully navigates the waters of history, politics, and human experience, leaving audiences with a deeper understanding of what defines their nation.

This production is a testament to the incredible power of theatre to mirror, challenge, and celebrate our shared story. With its compelling storytelling, exceptional cast, and innovative design, Dear England is a need-to-see performance, that hopefully will engage and resonate with both regular and not so regular theatregoers.
