The UK touring production of Dear Evan Hansen is a powerful reimagining of this iconic musical, bringing a fresh perspective on the poignant themes of loneliness, mental health, and connection. With an emotionally charged lead performance by Ryan Kopel as Evan, this tour delivers an impactful night at the theatre, even if certain plot elements occasionally feel drawn out.
The story centers on Evan Hansen, an anxious high schooler who, after a classmate's tragic death, finds himself unintentionally entwined in a lie that spirals beyond his control. His journey explores themes of identity, social isolation, and the quest for belonging- a plot that resonates as deeply now as it did on the West End.
One of the biggest draws of this tour is the remarkable cast, each bringing a fresh, dynamic energy to their roles. Ryan Kopel’s portrayal of Evan is truly outstanding. The role is demanding, both physically and emotionally, requiring stamina, vulnerability, and incredible vocal control- Kopel delivers on all fronts. His clear, supported voice was faultless, his high notes beautifully sustained, adding depth to Evan's raw emotional state. In key numbers like 'Waving Through a Window' and 'Words Fail', Kopel navigates complex vocal lines with ease, creating a deeply moving experience for the audience.
Other cast members also stand out, especially Alice Fearn as Evan’s mother Heidi, whose raw emotion and vocal strength bring heart to the challenging role of a single mother trying to connect with her son. Lauren Conroy as Zoe Murphy brings a nuanced, sensitive touch to Evan’s love interest, balancing warmth with resilience. Tom Dickerson brings excellent comic relief to the musical as Jared Kleinman, bouncing off the other cast members brilliantly, as well as providing some great vocals. Killian Thomas Lefevre is engaging and interesting as Connor Murphy, while Vivian Panka brings real depth and charm to Alana Back. Meanwhile, Helen Anker and Richard Hurst as Cynthia and Larry Murphy round out a strong ensemble, infusing depth into the grieving parents navigating an unimaginable loss.
While the touring version of Dear Evan Hansen maintains the essence of the original West End production, subtle changes give it a fresh appeal. The staging is slightly pared down but still uses projections to convey the overwhelming impact of social media on Evan’s life. This simplified set design may lack the intricate detail of the West End, but it shifts the focus squarely onto the characters’ raw emotions, allowing the actors’ performances to truly shine.
The music, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, is the highlight and fundamental strength of the production. Songs like 'For Forever', 'Only Us' and the powerful ensemble number 'You Will Be Found' are beautifully melodic and resonate deeply, perfectly mirroring Evan's emotional turmoil and the longing for connection that permeates the story. That said, the show’s pacing lags at points, especially in the second act. Certain scenes feel slightly stretched, and the plot occasionally meanders, which impacts the overall flow. Nonetheless, the emotionally charged score and Kopel’s riveting performance help the production recover from these slower moments.

Ryan Kopel’s Evan is a tour de force- worth experiencing for his performance alone, as well as for the lovely ensemble that brings this story to life across the UK.

Here You Come Again: Strong Performances & Nostalgic Set Design Outshine a Thin Plot in This Dolly Parton-Inspired Musical

Here You Come Again: The Musical is a lighthearted jukebox musical that blends the iconic charm of Dolly Parton’s greatest hits with a tale of self-discovery set during the lockdown era. Created by Bruce Vilanch, Gabriel Barre and Jonathan Harvey, this show brings the country queen’s signature wit and wisdom to the stage, all while exploring themes of loneliness, identity, and the universal need for connection. Currently touring, it is soon heading to the West End, where fans of Dolly’s music and humour will undoubtedly flock.
The story revolves around Kevin, a man struggling with the emotional fallout of a breakup during the pandemic. Isolated and adrift, Kevin is unexpectedly visited by his idol, Dolly Parton- part fairy godmother, part figment of his imagination—who helps him through his personal crisis with a series of humorous, song-filled moments. The concept of facing one's inner demons during lockdown is timely and offers moments of introspection, but ultimately, the plot feels somewhat underdeveloped. Kevin’s journey lacks the emotional depth to make his self-discovery truly engaging, and the ending, without giving too much away, feels a bit too convenient. While the premise is intriguing, there’s not enough character growth to sustain a two-hour show.
That being said, the real highlights of Here You Come Again lie in its stellar performances and detailed set design. The two leads- Tricia Paoluccio as Dolly and Steven Webb as Kevin- carry the production with extraordinary vocal talent and impeccable comedic timing. The chemistry between Dolly and Kevin is undeniable; their playful banter keeps the audience laughing, while their shared emotional moments add some needed tenderness to the storyline. The actors’ voices are perfectly suited to the classic Dolly Parton hits, delivering each song with warmth, power, and precision. Tricia Paoluccio is Dolly Parton, her portrayal is completely faultless, with every inflection and rhythm completely spot on. If you're attending this show for the music and the performances, you won’t be disappointed.
The set, designed by Paul Wills, is another triumph, offering a richly detailed, nostalgic environment that keeps things visually interesting despite its minimal changes throughout the show. Kevin's attic home is packed with fun Easter eggs, from a mischievous Sooty and Sweep puppet set to a slightly eerie Chucky doll lurking upstairs. Of course, Dolly Parton records dot the space, creating a shrine-like atmosphere perfect for a superfan like Kevin. The clever use of the set helps maintain the whimsical tone, with small magical effects (Richard Pinner) and props that appear out of nowhere, adding charm and surprise to each scene. The live band (led by Jordan Li-Smith) and ensemble, stationed mostly on the upper floor of the set, adds an extra layer of energy to the performance, and their seamless integration into the scenes enhances the intimate, living-room-concert vibe.
Despite the strengths of the performances and the captivating set, the plot often feels like it's simply a vehicle for Dolly’s music. While this is common in jukebox musicals, there are shows that manage to balance narrative and song more effectively. Kevin’s central conflict- his struggle with loneliness and identity post-breakup- doesn't feel fully resolved by the end. His transformation, or lack thereof, feels handed to him rather than earned, which may leave some audience members (myself included) feeling a bit underwhelmed.
However, the fairytale-like quality of Dolly’s guidance and the feel-good nature of her music provides enough sweetness and heart to make the experience worthwhile. For those who are diehard Dolly fans or enjoy a nostalgic trip through the country icon’s greatest hits, Here You Come Again offers plenty of charm. The show may not deliver the most compelling story, but its combination of five-star performances, a cleverly designed set, and Dolly’s ever-enchanting presence makes it worth a visit for a fun, light night out at the theatre.

Lord of the Dance: A Lifetime of Standing Ovations is a unique production that showcases the unmatched talent of its dancers, but it also carries a sense of nostalgia that doesn’t quite hold up in today’s world. Originally created by Michael Flatley in 1996, the show is rooted in Irish mythology, featuring stunning footwork and energetic performances.
At its core, Lord of the Dance tells a mythic tale of good versus evil, with the "Lord" representing all that’s noble and heroic, while the "Dark Lord" embodies chaos and villainy. As these two archetypal male figures battle for dominance, female characters like "Saoirse" and "The Morrighan" find themselves relegated to fairly traditional roles: yearning for the hero or caught in the middle of the conflict. The story itself feels more like a backdrop to the dancing rather than a fully fleshed-out narrative, and the idea of macho men saving the day while women stand by feels a little tired in today’s cultural climate.
Visually, the show is a mixed bag. At times, the lighting, costumes, and staging can be quite effective, creating moments of real magic. However, there are other moments where the visuals feel random and disconnected, with no real cohesion in design or purpose. The costumes range from ethereal and elegant to overly flashy and out of place. The lighting effects, while dynamic, often seem to be trying to add drama where the narrative fails to deliver. These dated visual elements can distract from the otherwise incredible dance performances and make the production feel less polished than it once was.
That said, the live music elements, including violin interludes and occasional vocal performances, are a welcome addition. They break up the dance-heavy sequences in a way that adds depth and texture to the show. The mix of live music and recorded tracks is well-balanced, enhancing the energy of the performance while giving the dancers brief moments to reset.
The dancing itself is the undeniable highlight of the show. The sheer athleticism and precision of the cast are nothing short of remarkable. The iconic Irish step-dancing routines are performed with an intensity and flair that keeps the audience fully engaged, even when the story feels secondary. The choreography remains as impressive as ever, with the dancers’ footwork bringing an unmatched level of excitement and spectacle to the stage. Even if the visuals and plot don’t always hit the mark, the dancing alone is enough to make the show worth seeing.
Lord of the Dance is still a strong production for fans of Irish dance and music, but it feels very much like a product of its time. The plot is simple, predictable, and hinges on outdated gender roles, while the visual elements, although sometimes effective, lack coherence and can feel random or overdone. Yet despite these shortcomings, the live music and the incredible talent of the dancers keep the show afloat and make it worth a watch. It's a show that knows what it is and embraces it fully. It might not break new ground for those familiar with it, but it offers a nostalgic, enchanting escape for anyone craving the magic of Irish dance. For longtime fans, it’s a delightful revisit to a cherished classic, while for newer audiences, it serves as a beautiful introduction to the art form, even if it does show its age in places.

101 Dalmatians Cast Teams Up with Guide Dogs UK for a Pawsome Charity Event at Woking's New Victoria Theatre
Last week, the New Victoria Theatre in Woking hosted a heartwarming event where theatre magic met charitable efforts, as the cast of 101 Dalmatians the Musical teamed up with Guide Dogs UK to support their work. Led by Hear’Say star Kym Marsh, who plays Cruella de Vil, the cast had the opportunity to meet some special guests: real-life guide dogs and puppies in training.
Guide Dogs UK was invited to the theatre for a week-long charity initiative that proved to be a tremendous success. Thanks to the generosity of Woking audiences, the charity raised an impressive £2,115 through post-show bucket collections. These funds will directly benefit Guide Dogs UK in their mission to help individuals with sight loss lead independent lives.
In a memorable behind-the-scenes moment, the cast- fully dressed in their 101 Dalmatians costumes- met the working guide dogs and the adorable puppies in training on stage. This touching encounter saw the dogs even interact with the show’s dalmatian puppets, earning the guide dogs’ official tail-wag of approval. It was a heartwarming mix of life imitating art, as the show, which revolves around the lovable spotted dogs, took the chance to connect with some real-life canine heroes.
Sandi Johnson, Community Fundraising Relationship Manager for Guide Dogs, was delighted by the experience and the support from the Woking community:
My guide dog, Kane, and I, along with our local fundraisers, have felt incredibly welcome at the New Victoria Theatre this week. We can’t thank you enough for the generosity and enthusiasm."
The Mayor of Woking was also part of the joyful event, attending the press performance and joining the cast and guide dogs for a photocall that celebrated the success of the partnership.
The event created quite a buzz on social media, with a behind-the-scenes reel capturing the magical moment when the cast met the guide dogs. The video, posted in collaboration with Kym Marsh, garnered 75,000 views and over 1,300 likes on Instagram, highlighting the power of theatre to not only entertain but also inspire and support important causes.
This special collaboration between 101 Dalmatians the Musical and Guide Dogs UK is an example of how the performing arts can raise awareness and funds for charitable causes while creating magical moments for all involved. The New Victoria Theatre and its patrons truly showed the generosity and community spirit that Woking is known for.
With Kym Marsh at the helm as the delightfully wicked Cruella de Vil, and with real-life guide dogs wagging their tails in support, it’s clear that this event was more than just a performance—it was a celebration of the pawsitive impact that theatre and charity can make together.

Orange Tree Theatre Announces Exciting 2025 Season Featuring World Premieres and Classic Revivals
Orange Tree Theatre (OT) has announced its highly anticipated 2025 season, packed with a dynamic lineup of six new plays, including four world premieres, two rediscoveries, and a beloved classic comedy. Artistic Director Tom Littler and Executive Director Hanna Streeter have curated a season that blends cutting-edge new writing with timeless stories, exploring powerful themes such as war, power, privilege, and the human condition.
The season launches with Churchill in Moscow, an imagined meeting between Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin in 1942, reuniting playwright Howard Brenton and Littler for their sixth collaboration. The production stars Roger Allam in the titular role and promises to be a standout event. Following this, the theatre will revive April De Angelis’ acclaimed Playhouse Creatures, starring Anna Chancellor and directed by Michael Oakley, before transferring to the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and Theatre Royal Bath. Next, the London premiere of Mark Ravenhill’s Ben and Imo, produced in collaboration with the RSC and directed by Erica Whyman, will feature Samuel Barnett and Victoria Yeates reprising their original roles. The spring season concludes with a revival of Terence Rattigan’s In Praise of Love, directed by Amelia Sears.
The summer and autumn months promise even more excitement with Chiara Atik's Poor Clare, directed by Blanche McIntyre, and world premieres of two eagerly anticipated adaptations: Dance of Death, adapted and directed by Richard Eyre from the play by August Strindberg, and Hedda, a fresh take on Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler by Tanika Gupta. Tom Littler will also helm a special 250th-anniversary production of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s classic comedy The Rivals. Additionally, the OT Young Company will present Alice in Wonderland, a new adaptation by Chinonyerem Odimba based on Lewis Carroll’s iconic novel.
As part of OT's ongoing commitment to engaging younger audiences, the theatre is launching OT Under 30 Nights, offering 18-29-year-olds the chance to see shows for just £15, complete with a post-show talk and a social event. The inaugural event will take place on 8 November, featuring the JMK Award-winning production Guards at the Taj. Cast members Usaamah Ibraheem Hussain and Maanuv Thiara will participate in the post-show panel, alongside creatives Roisin Jenner and Priya Virdee, with the discussion chaired by Kalungi Ssebandeke, the 2023 JMK award winner.
In addition to the main stage programming, the OT’s Community team will continue their work with young people, offering educational performances of Julius Caesar and Romeo & Juliet for primary and secondary school audiences, as well as participation in the National Theatre’s Connections festival for teenagers.
Priority booking for Churchill in Moscow, Playhouse Creatures, Ben and Imo, and In Praise of Love opens on 16 October, with general sales starting on 28 October. On-sale dates for the rest of the season will be announced soon.

Sinitta to join Chicago as Mama Morton in Bradford and Stoke
David Ian for Crossroads Live, in association with Barry and Fran Weissler, is thrilled to announce that international pop star Sinitta will join the UK and Ireland tour of Chicago as Mama Morton for a strictly limited run. Sinitta will perform at Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre (21–26 October 2024) and Stoke’s Regent Theatre (25–30 November 2024).
Sinitta expressed her excitement, saying: I’m so excited to be returning to Chicago. I jumped at the chance to step back into Mama Morton’s shoes for two weeks on the upcoming UK and Ireland tour. To return to the stage with these incredible musicians and a stunning company doing amazing choreography is a dream come true. The role of Mama has certainly been good to me, and I can’t wait to rub shoulders with my merry murderesses again!
Sinitta reprises her role as Mama Morton, joining a stellar cast that includes stage and soap star Faye Brookes as Roxie Hart, Strictly Come Dancing favourite Kevin Clifton as Billy Flynn, leading West End talent Djalenga Scott as Velma Kelly, alongside Joshua Lloyd as Amos Hart and Jordan Lee Davies as Mary Sunshine.

Les Misérables, Billy Elliot and others to be Released in Cinemas for Anniversary Celebrations
Get ready for a cinematic treat! Six filmed stage productions are set to grace cinema screens over the next six months, offering theatre fans a unique chance to experience some of the most celebrated performances from the comfort of their local theatres. Produced by CinemaLive, these screenings will mark significant milestones for each production.
Kicking off the series, Miss Saigon, filmed during its 25th anniversary gala performance at the Prince Edward Theatre in 2016, is currently being shown in cinemas. Following that, the beloved classic The Phantom of the Opera, which celebrated its own 25th anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall in 2011, will screen on November 3 and 5. This production stars Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess, showcasing their incredible talents in a visually stunning performance.
Next up, the award-winning Girl From the North Country, written by Conor McPherson and featuring 20 songs by the legendary Bob Dylan, will be screened on November 21 and 24. This version was recorded at the Belasco Theatre in New York in 2022, bringing its emotional storytelling and poignant music to a broader audience.
Looking ahead to 2025, theatre-goers can look forward to Les Misérables- The Staged Concert, filmed in 2019 at the Gielgud Theatre. This production features a star-studded cast, including Michael Ball, Alfie Boe, Carrie Hope Fletcher, and Matt Lucas. It will be available to view in cinemas starting February 2, 2025.
Shortly after, the arena tour version of Jesus Christ Superstar, featuring an all-star cast that includes Tim Minchin, Mel C, Ben Forster, and Chris Moyles, will be screened across the UK from March 1, 2025. This performance promises to bring a fresh and dynamic interpretation of the rock opera to fans.

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the current UK tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, and it was a nearly perfect theatrical experience. From the moment the curtain rose, I could tell this production was something special. Having seen it previously at the Barbican Centre, I knew what to expect but I was really pleasantly surprised with how well the production has translated for touring.
Andrew Lloyd Webber's show, a rock-opera-musical has one of the most intricate and powerful scores I've personally experienced in the theatre. The vocal demands from every performer, whether the high as mountains soprano tracks or the booming bass of Caiaphas, every role requires strength, integrity and control which this cast deliver in spades. Alternate in the role, Charlie McCullagh's portrayal of Jesus is astounding. Taking on the role with the quiet swagger of a popstar, it's evident why he'd garner a following and his kind, charismatic persona, makes his eventual crucifixion incredibly moving and powerful. Vocally, you cannot fault his performance, (his Gethsemane is firmly in my top performances of 2024) every single note is supported and intentionally performed and the emotion imbued into each moment is magnetic to watch. Shem Omari James' Judas is equally compelling, delivering a nuanced and passionate performance that adds layers to the character and leave you questioning his motives long after the curtain goes down. The chemistry between the two leads is palpable, making their dynamic and relationship both riveting and heartbreaking. Hannah Richardson completes the trio perfectly, bringing a tenderness to Mary almost acting as a mediator throughout. Her voice is soulful and she really made the iconic songs feel new and refreshed.
Musically, the production is outstanding. The orchestra deliver Andrew Lloyd Webber's iconic score with vibrant intensity. The contemporary rock-infused arrangements breathe new life into the familiar tunes while still honouring the original spirit of the musical. This is an incredibly well-oiled machine of a show that seems to have paid meticulous attention to making every single moment hit with astounding intensity.
Visually, the show is a feast for the eyes. Tom Scutt's set design is innovative, using modern elements to create a versatile and dynamic stage, without the need for any huge set changes. Equally, his costumes, blending traditional and modern styles, are simplistically striking and allow for some really interesting moments, especially towards the end when some characters literally get Jesus' blood on their hands and bodies. One of my favourite elements of the musical is Lee Curran's lighting which is continually awe inspiring as it enhances dramatic moments and add a layer of symbolism that beautifully complements the narrative. Whilst I don't always understand the meaning of Drew McOnie's choreography, I find it incredibly arresting and love the frenetic energy that it brings to the stage.
The only minor drawback for me, is the occasionally overpowering sound mix. At times, the balance between the orchestra and the vocalists is off, making it difficult to catch all of Tim Rice's intense and often witty lyrics. However, this was a small blemish on an otherwise stellar production.
In my opinion, this touring version of the classic show is a must-see. It’s a masterful revival that pays homage to the original while bringing a fresh and contemporary twist. Whether you're a long-time fan of the musical or experiencing it for the first time, this production is sure to leave a lasting impression. Impeccably performed, it's one of the most moving and powerful shows I've seen this year and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Originally blazing onto the Broadway scene in 2011, Bonnie and Clyde: The Musical quickly gained a cult following for its bold storytelling and infectious tunes. Since finally debuting in London 10 years later with a concert version in January 2022, the show has had a number of runs and now, it continues making waves with its UK tour, bringing a slice of American outlaw charm to a number of regional theatres. This is an electrifying production that captivates from start to finish. The dynamic rendition of the infamous duo's story brings a fresh perspective to the stage, blending catchy tunes with poignant storytelling and surprising amount of humour, all to make it a top shelf night at the theatre
Drawing from the true narrative, Bonnie and Clyde traces the journey of its titular characters from childhood aspirations – Bonnie dreaming of a glamorous life as a movie star like Clara Bow, and Clyde yearning for the outlaw allure of Billy the Kid. Their paths cross serendipitously, leading to a tumultuous life of crime that ultimately ends in tragedy. Interwoven within their tale is an unrequited love subplot and poignant glimpses into the economic hardships of the era, which effectively sheds light on the harsh realities that drove the Barrow Brothers to pursue a life of crime.
The leading roles in this show are demanding ones indeed, but Katie Tonkinson and Alex James-Hatton make them look effortless as they bring the outlaws to life and provide killer vocals. The chemistry between the pair is excellent and I found myself absorbed in their love (and death) story. This show thrives because of the way it humanises the duo, allowing you to really feel for them despite their law breaking. Their story is one that's been romanticised a thousand times and in this case that totally works. Sure, there's a lot of be said for not glamourising killers, but I think this age old tale gets a free pass and whilst the show does shy away a bit from really showing the pain they caused, it touches on it enough that you never forget their dark sides.
Speaking of dark, let's talk about the lighting design because, I love it. Zoe Spurr has done a fantastic job of using the lighting to highlight morality and emotion. For example during 'God's Arms Are Always Open' where the church scene is bathed in warm hues, contrasting with Clyde's crime spree depicted in stark white; and during 'Raise a Little Hell' (which is the stand out scene of the show for me)– the moment Clyde takes his first life, he is bathed in almost complete darkness with only a sliver of his face lit, it's really, really effective and dramatic.
Musically Frank Wildhorn and Don Black have crafted a show that's rocky and sexy and soulful. The music is catchy and really furthers the characters' emotional journey's rather than just filling in gaps. There are a tonne of stand out moments, and vocals that will certainly give you goosebumps. Ivan Menchell's book has some great moments and is multilayered both in terms of character and plot. The pacing is at times a little slow and I do think it could be tweaked a bit to get the adrenaline up a little more but there's still lots to enjoy.
All that being said, it's a wild, law-breaking escapade that'll have you on the edge of your seat, begging for more; so grab your tickets, round up your posse, and get ready to raise a little hell with Bonnie and Clyde in Woking and on tour.

Since premiering in the West End and playing at a number of theatres, 2:22 A Ghost Story has established itself as a must-see spooky night out. It's a production that promises to thrill and entertain audiences, and definitely does just that.
Drawing from the personal experiences of playwright Danny Robbins, this haunting journey into the supernatural explores themes of love, loss, and enduring connections. The storyline is skilfully crafted, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats while infusing humour that enhances the realism. However, amidst the solid pacing and unexpected twists, the abundance of overacting in this touring version detracts from the authenticity, making it challenging to fully engage with the narrative.
Set against the backdrop of a dinner party with minimal set changes, the focus remains on the characters so there's a lot riding on them. This cast, made up of Vera Chok, Jay McGuiness, George Rainsford and Fiona Wade, mostly succeed in creating a believable atmosphere, capturing the essence of a boozy evening, however at times, it really feels like you can see some of the performers acting and the line delivery is too over the top to be realistic. When I last saw the show, it almost felt as if you were a fly on the wall during the haunted dinner party, but this time everything is a bit more forced and over performed. The dynamics between the characters are there and you can understand the boiling pot of traumas and emotions that are sewn throughout, but they're not as impactful as when the play is performed with more nuance.
Additionally, while the sound effects aim to heighten the tension, they often feel conspicuous and unnecessary, failing to enhance the overall atmosphere. However, beyond these surface-level thrills, 2:22 A Ghost Story delves into social and economic issues, as well as the dichotomy between belief and science. This commentary adds depth to the production, and helps to create a genuinely good play.
Anna Fleischle's set design allows for spooky moments while maintaining the mundane setting of a family home. The attention to detail, combined with Lucy Carter's atmospheric lighting, provides a perfect backdrop for this ghostly tale.
2:22 A Ghost Story is definitely worth seeing. Despite its flaws, including excessive theatrics and unnecessary jump scares, the play offers moments of genuine suspense and an interesting array commentary.

In the sun-drenched world of I Should Be So Lucky: The Musical, there's a flicker of potential, but sadly, it fades quicker than the sparkle of a disco ball. The show, buoyed by a strong cast and glitzy staging, is fun but struggles to hit the high notes it aims for.
Let's start with the positives: the cast. They're the shining stars of this production, injecting life and energy into every scene. With their talent and charisma, they manage to elevate even the most lacklustre moments. Each member deserves applause for their efforts in salvaging what they can from the material. To name a few, Scott Paige brings hilarity to every moment of his stage time, Kayla Carter as Bonnie provides some wonderful vocals and her blossoming relationship with Ash played by Giovanni Spanò is one of the highlights of the show. Giovanni is laugh out loud funny and get to briefly show off his killer vocals. It's a bit of theme in the show that the amazing vocal talents of the cast don't get to really be shown off, due to the hundred other things that are happening throughout. This is definitely the case with Melissa Jacques as Shelley who is wonderful, but having seen her in Everybody's Talking About Jamie, I would've loved some more chances for her to sing and soar.
As I mentioned, there's a LOT going on. There are a heap of side plots and vague character references and development which never have enough time to really mean anything. It sort of feels like every idea made it into the show and there was no development or streamlining to make it work. Another issue is that the show borders between being super sincere and not taking itself too seriously, so at times you're unsure whether you're laughing with or at the show. There's certainly potential, but in it's current form, it feels like a strange fever dream.
Now, onto the staging. It's undeniably flashy, dripping with sequins and neon lights reminiscent of a Kylie concert. The set (Tom Rogers) is really good, and there's a certain thrill in watching the glitzy spectacle unfold. However, as the show progresses, the excitement begins to wane, revealing a repetitive pattern that feels more like a recycling of ideas than a deliberate artistic choice. The 80s music video vibes are real, but there's only so many times you can get joy from the heart shaped bed rolling onto the stage.
Despite these glimmers of promise, I Should Be So Lucky: The Musical ultimately falls flat. While it may provide a momentary escape into a world of pop music and glamour, it lacks the substance needed to sustain interest beyond the surface. Thankfully the cast do wonder with what they're given, but even the most talented performers can't fully save this misguided show. Much like an 80s tune, it's enjoyable in the moment but quickly fades from memory.

A night of laughter; this sexy, fun and wonderfully performed musical grabs attention from the off!
Based on the famous 1990 film, the show tells the story of Vivian, a prostitute falling on hard times in Beverly Hills. By pure chance, she catches the attention of a Billionaire, Edward. Their instant connection prompts Edward to offer residence to Vivian, in exchange for her services for one week whilst he stays at the famously opulent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Both are certain that no feelings could grow during this business deal. It seems they are both to be proved wrong…
The leading role of Vivian Ward was of course made famous by Julia Roberts. Needless to say, this iconic role is a hard one to fill. Amber Davies, who gained public attention with her 2017 Love Island win plays the role with brilliance and proves she's much more than a reality star. Her acting, singing and dancing is on point, a true triple threat! Whilst delivering iconic lines from the movie, Amber makes the role her own and creates a charming character who the audience root for.
Oliver Savile portrays the role of Edward Lewis excellently, which is no surprise considering his extensive theatre experience! Edward’s closed-off attitude and need to hold everyone at arms length, slowly wavers as Vivian wins his affection. The strong chemistry between Amber and Oliver is more than apparent, especially in the few raunchy moments throughout the show. It's a pleasure to see them act together.
Natalie Paris, who plays Vivian’s best friend Kit De Luca is a true standout with the most incredible vocal range! A continual scene stealer, her ‘Rock and Roll’ style is effortless, and she brings the witty character to life superbly. The rest of the killer ensemble do a fantastic job of keeping energy high with their multiple dance numbers and general presence.
With music Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, a book by Garry Marshall and the film’s screenwriter J.F. Lawton and direction and choreography Jerry Mitchell, the magic of the show is there from the start, and stays throughout. Pretty Woman on tour is a fantastic screen to stage adaptation that has all the moments the audience know and love from the smash hit film, with extra theatrical additions to make it an utterly engaging experience.
The overall design of the show fits the era and flavour of the musical well. The use of bright background lighting (Kenneth Posner and Philip S. Rosenberg) during song and dance numbers keep the overall feeling of the show light and fun. Equally Tom Rodgers's costume design really represents the story well; of course the iconic red ballgown from the movie makes its appearance alongside a number of other fun costumes. David Rockwell's set is simple but effective- one minute you are looking at dingy Hollywood street corner, the next you are in the Penthouse suite of the Beverly Wilshire!
Overall, the lightheartedness of the story and the fantastic talent onstage makes for a perfect, adult-only night out. I highly recommend a trip to Hollywood via Woking!

Currently on tour after a West End stint, The Drifters Girl offers audiences a glimpse at an intriguing journey, accompanied by top tapping hits and universally great performances. Showered with acclaim at the 2022 Olivier Awards, the show follows the dramatic narrative of Faye Treadwell, the incredible force behind shaping The Drifters.
While grappling with some visually lacklustre sets, the production compensates with performances that pack a punch and a memorable soundtrack featuring timeless tunes like ‘Saturday Night At The Movies,’ ‘Save The Last Dance For Me,’ and ‘Stand By Me.’
Despite the occasional visual challenge posed by the set design, The Drifters Girl invites audiences to dive headfirst into the heart of the action with an immediate and dynamic narrative approach. This spirited start, while invigorating, might require a bit of time for the audience to acquaint themselves with the characters and their relationships. If you’re not familiar with the story you may be a little dazed, but thanks to the fast pace, you don’t really have time to think about it!
From the energetic get go, the performances are the true stars of the show. Under the compelling portrayal of Faye Treadwell by Carly Mercedes-Dyer, the cast deliver stellar performances that highlight the ambition, determination, and drive which drives the story. The group's seamless transitions, brought to life by Ashford Campbell, Daniel Haswell, Miles Anthony Daley, and Tarik Frimpong, showcase their artistry in navigating the dynamic changes within The Drifters. Vocally, each performer has some stand out moments however don’t often get the chance to really come into their own. Carly Mercedes Dyer perfectly performs the peak moments of the show, with vocals that simmer and then soar.
The musical's charm lies in its unforgettable songs, which act as both a soulful soundtrack and sturdy pillars supporting the narrative. The emotional depth conveyed through these musical moments significantly contributes to the overall impact, and has you rooting for the story. However, it does feel like something is missing, with the short acts skimming over a lot of drama and never quite packing a punch.
Whilst it’s not a life altering night at the theatre, The Drifters Girl has performances that feel authentic, a soundtrack that strikes a chord, and a narrative that unveils the essence of a key figure in music history. Despite the initial visual challenges and a swift plunge into the storyline, the production eventually finds its rhythm, offering an enjoyable experience for fans of The Drifters and musical theatre enthusiasts alike.

The Bodyguard the Musical on Tour Review: Starts with a bang and thrills throughout!

Demanding your focus from the very first second, The Bodyguard the Musical has it all! Romance, rivalry, and iconic music for all ages to enjoy.
As per the 1992 movie of the same name, the show tells the story of a famous superstar finding herself to be the unwanted attention of a threatening stalker. As a solution, her team decided to hire a bodyguard to keep her and her family safe. It’s not long before he becomes more invested in his employer than he ever has before.
The leading role of Rachel Marron was made famous by the legendary Whitney Houston. Needless to say, the bar has been set rather high. Multi-platinum recording artist, Emily Williams (also known as ‘Queen of the High C’s) performs the role with phenomenal ease. Her vocal range is staggering! Emily performs Whitney’s iconic songs so beautifully, whilst making sure to add her own touches here and there.
Ayden Callaghan portrays the role of Frank Farmer (the Bodyguard) in a distinguishable manner. His character is stern and unwavering, yet begrudgingly, he shows a softer side as his feelings for Rachel grow. Ayden and Emily have fantastic chemistry together, making their romantic storyline so believable!
Manasseh Mapira, who plays Rachel’s son Fletcher, is an absolute delight to watch. His dancing, vocals and overall charisma have the audience in love! A star in the making…
After a slower-paced first half, things really begin to move in Act Two. The ensemble have a larger part to play, which they do so well; whether it be whilst playing some tone-deaf karaoke singers, or Rachel’s back-up dancers, the energy lifts when they are on the stage.
The set and costume design by Tim Hatley fit the era and flavour of the musical well. It would have been more effective to see the stage space utilised more, but the potential is definitely there!
The use of dramatic sound effects and lighting/projections are what you would expect from a 1992 movie. Whilst the connection to the original movie rings true, some modernisation here may have been beneficial.
Overall, the vocal talent of the cast, the iconic music originally given to us by the one and only Whitney Houston, and the passionate storyline, sells this thrilling musical so well. Highly recommend!

Life of Pi on Tour at the New Victoria Theatre Review: A Painful Story Vibrantly Brought to Life

Before last night I had no prior exposure to Life of Pi. I hadn't read Yann Martel's acclaimed novel or watched Ang Lee's award-winning film. Approaching the play with no preconceptions, I found it enchanting. While it may not resonate with everyone, I personally adored the captivating production by playwright Lolita Chakrabarti. It held my attention from the very beginning to the end of the performance. I found myself deeply engrossed in Pi's perspective on faith, humanity, survival, brutality, and mankind, and I even wished there hadn't been an interval as I was so enthralled.
The narrative revolves around Piscine "Pi" Patel, the son of a zookeeper in Pondicherry, who claims to have survived a shipwreck on a life-raft with a Bengal tiger as his companion.
Some readers might initially think this story isn't their cup of tea, but let me assure you that the magic lies in the simplicity of the stage design, the visual effects, and the lighting that interweaves the tale. The incredible collection of large puppets portraying the captive animals from the zoo adds to this magic.
The play centers around Pi, portrayed by Divesh Subaskaran in his impressive professional debut. Divesh truly shines in this role, immersing the audience in Pi's world. I was particularly impressed by his performance, seamlessly transitioning from a mischievous young man-boy to an overwrought, delusional individual grappling with the world's cruelty. He later revealed a kinder, gentler side, yearning to believe in the world of storytelling and escape the horrors of the boat's events. The two actors who questioned the young Pi about his experiences greatly complemented Divesh's portrayal, contributing to the unraveling of the story with their strong performances.
Credit must be given to the entire cast. The stage was always vibrant with energy, the performers transforming it in seconds as Pi recalled flashbacks of his voyage. The mastery of the remarkable puppeteers, animating butterflies, shoals of fish, a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and the Bengal tiger, was truly commendable. Special acknowledgment goes to those who skillfully maneuvered the Bengal Tiger, creating a sense of predatory readiness on the boat.
For me, the imaginative world that offers solace from the world's atrocities, coupled with the magical animals brought to life through outstanding puppetry, are the true stars of this show. This made the theatrical event a thoroughly enjoyable experience for everyone.

Last night the New Victoria theatre came alive with Rodgers and Hammerstein's timeless musical, The King and I. Set in the 1860s, the storyline revolves around the King of Siam, portrayed by Brian Rivera, who hires the intelligent British schoolteacher Anna Leonowens, played by Annalene Beechey, to educate his extensive family. The clash of their personalities and cultural backgrounds sets the stage for a compelling narrative.
The performances showcased a beautiful transformation of understanding and mutual appreciation between the stubborn monarch and the determined British teacher. This transformation is beautifully encapsulated through the touching rendition of 'Getting to Know You' by Anna (Annalene Beechey) and the Royal Children, leaving the audience in awe.
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s memorable score stole the spotlight, standing the test of time. The talented cast breathed life into these classic songs, leaving the audience longing for more. The chemistry between the leads was palpable, and both Beechey and Rivera delivered exceptional performances. Beechey's voice charmed the audience, while Rivera's portrayal of the King of Siam was both strong and hypnotic, reminiscent of Yul Brynner's iconic performance at the London Palladium in 1979.
Special mention must be made of other outstanding cast members, including Cezarah Bonner as Lady Thiang and Marienella Phillips as Tuptim, who delivered exceptional performances that enriched the overall experience.
The stage was adorned with a stunning backdrop featuring vibrant colors that transported the audience to the sumptuous world of the King’s Palace, thanks to the masterful designs by Michael Yeargan. Catherine Zuber's costumes enhanced the performers' presence, making them glitter and shine against the opulent palace setting.
The choreography by Christopher Gattelli was a true standout, with intricate dance numbers blending traditional Thai movement with a modern flair. The 'Small House of Uncle Thomas' dance sequence was particularly mesmerising, captivating the audience with its hypnotic beauty and emotional resonance. Generally the show is well paced, although Act 2 might have felt a bit lengthy to some.
In summary, The King and I musical on tour provides a captivating experience, combining talented performers, unforgettable music, entrancing dance sequences, an immersive set, and beautiful costumes. I wholeheartedly recommend this production, and for me, it was undoubtedly a 5 out of 5.

New Cast Announced for The Phantom of the Opera at His Majesty's Theatre
Cameron Mackintosh is pleased to announce new cast members for Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera at His Majesty's Theatre from July 31, 2023. The show is currently scheduled until March 2, 2024.
Lily Kerhoas joins as Christine Daaé, Joe Griffiths-Brown as Raoul, David Kristopher-Brown as Ubaldo Piangi, and Maiya Hikasa as Meg Giry. Jon Robyns continues in the role of The Phantom, along with Kelly Glyptis as Carlotta Giudicelli, Adam Linstead as Monsieur André, Matt Harrop as Monsieur Firmin and Francesca Ellis as Madame Giry. At certain performances the role of Christine Daaé will be played by Paige Blankson.
The cast is completed by Hollie Aires, Federica Basile, Corina Clark, Michael Colbourne, Leonard Cook, Colleen Rose Curran, Lily De-La-Haye, Hywel Dowsell, Connor Ewing, Serina Faull, Florence Fowler, James Gant, Melanie Gowie, Eilish Harmon-Beglan, Yukina Hasebe, Samuel Haughton, Thomas Holdsworth, Jacob Hughes, Grace Hume, Tim Morgan, Eve Shanu-Wilson, Tim Southgate, Zoë Soleil Vallée, Jasmine Wallis, Victoria Ward, Ralph Watts, Simon Whitaker, and Andrew York.
Lily Kerhoas previously appeared in Les Misérables and trained at the Royal Academy of Music. Joe Griffiths-Brown was part of the West End company of Hamilton, while David Kristopher-Brown has past experience in The Phantom of the Opera and other productions. Maiya Hikasa's credits include Billy Elliot and the international Tour of Cats.
The Phantom of the Opera is produced by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Group Ltd. The music is by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Charles Hart and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe. The production is based on Gaston Leroux's novel 'Le Fantôme de l'Opera'. The show has been a global sensation, playing to millions of people worldwide.
The London production underwent a creative overhaul after the COVID-related shutdown and has received rave reviews. The legendary musical, celebrating its 37th birthday in October 2023, will continue its successful run at His Majesty's Theatre.
Beyond London, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences globally, with productions in Japan, Korea, and on a world tour. Cameron Mackintosh's new production recently concluded a record-breaking run in Australia and will open in Vienna in March 2024. Other exciting productions are also underway in Greece, Italy, and Spain.
