The Lightning Thief the Percy Jackson Musical based on Rick Riordan’s beloved novel of the same name, finds its perfect home on the intimate stage of The Other Palace. This fantastically staged production knows exactly what it’s aiming for: a heartfelt, high-energy story for fans of the books, young theatergoers, and anyone seeking an escapist evening of fun. It’s not a transformative piece of theatre but it never tries to be. Instead, it’s a faithful, joyfully chaotic adaptation that delivers a thoroughly entertaining experience.

The musical, with a book by Joe Tracz and music and lyrics by Rob Rokicki, condenses the sprawling first book of the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series into a fast-paced two-hour show. Percy Jackson, a seemingly average teenager, discovers he’s the demigod son of Poseidon. Alongside his best friend Grover and fellow camper Annabeth, he embarks on a quest to retrieve Zeus’s stolen lightning bolt, battling monsters and confronting his insecurities along the way. Themes of friendship, belonging, and overcoming personal challenges echo throughout, resonating especially with anyone navigating the struggles of growing up.

The standout performances begin with Max Harwood as Percy Jackson. Harwood, known for his starring role as Jamie New in the movie version of Everybody's Talking About Jamie and his recent role in Stranger Things once again demonstrates why he’s a star on the rise. I was lucky enough to see Max's debut as Melchior in Spring Awakening and I knew great things were on the horizon for him so it's so wonderful to see him leading this show with such brilliance. His strong, healthy vocals handle Rokicki’s rock-influenced score with confidence, while his physicality and emotional depth ground Percy’s journey in authenticity. Harwood’s Percy is funny, flawed, and fiercely relatable- a hero in trainers we can all root for. Watching him embody the sarcastic yet earnest demigod is an absolute treat, solidifying his status as one of the most exciting young performers on the stage today.

Mirroring Percy’s charm are Jessica Lee as Annabeth Chase and Scott Folan as Grover. Jessica brings a sharp wit and determined energy to Annabeth, perfectly capturing the daughter of Athena’s intellect and drive. Her duet with Harwood, 'My Grand Plan', is both heartfelt and empowering. Scott, meanwhile, is utterly delightful as Grover, mixing lovely comedic timing with moments of vulnerability that bring the satyr’s loyalty to life.

The ensemble shines, masterfully multi-rolling through a colourful array of characters, from meddling gods to fearsome monsters. Their quick changes and distinct characterisations are a testament to their talent and energy. Whether it’s a eye-dangling Fury or a groovy Poseidon, the ensemble brings Riordan’s mythological world vividly to life.

The creative team deserves immense credit for transforming the small stage of The Other Palace into a dynamic playground of gods and monsters. Charlie Morgan Jones’s vibrant lighting design and Duncan McLean’s imaginative projections work in tandem to expand the space, while clever touches- like bubbles to suggest underwater scenes- immerse the audience in Percy’s world.

The musical’s ability to nod to large-scale moments from the book (like the showdown with Ares) without overcomplicating them is a smart move by director Lizzi Gee. By focusing on character and humour rather than spectacle, the adaptation avoids the pitfalls of feeling overly ambitious.

Rob Rokicki’s score is an infectious blend of rock and pop that captures the angst and excitement of Percy’s story. Songs like 'Good Kid' and 'The Tree on the Hill' resonate emotionally, while the humorous numbers like 'D.O.A.' provide laugh-out-loud moments. That said, at times, the sound mix leaned too heavily on volume, making some lyrics difficult to catch- a minor issue in an otherwise great production.

The Lightning Thief thrives because it knows its audience. It’s not here to change the world- it’s here to celebrate it, offering fans of Riordan’s books and newcomers alike a chance to step into a world of camaraderie and mythological mischief. The Other Palace, with its cosy yet versatile stage, feels tailor-made for this production, inviting the audience into Camp Half-Blood’s warm embrace.

The musical excels at what it sets out to do: entertain, uplift, and provide a few hours of joyous escapism. With a faithful adaptation, a gifted cast led by the brilliant Max Harwood, and a visually inventive production, it’s a treat for fans and a celebration of the power of storytelling- a monster of a show! Like Percy’s time at Camp Half-Blood, it reminds us that even when life gets messy, friendship and unity can see us through.

Stockard Channing Joins Brie Larson and Star-Studded Cast for the Thrilling West End Revival of Elektra


The timeless power of Greek tragedy is set to take the West End stage as Empire Street Productions announces additional casting for Elektra, Sophokles’s renowned drama, featuring a new, visceral translation by the award-winning poet Anne Carson. Academy Award-winner Brie Larson, previously announced as the lead, will make her West End debut alongside an impressive lineup: the internationally celebrated Stockard Channing (The West Wing, The Good Wife), Marième Diouf (Romeo and Juliet, The Globe), Greg Hicks (Grapes of Wrath, Coriolanus), and Evening Standard Award-winner Patrick Vaill, fresh off his acclaimed performance in Oklahoma! and Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

Directed by the visionary Daniel Fish, known for his groundbreaking Tony and Olivier Award-winning revival of Oklahoma!, this production of Elektra promises a powerful, haunting experience. Fish's return to Sophokles’s masterpiece marks the first major revival of the classic Greek tragedy in over a decade. The creative team behind Elektra features Annie-B Parson (Choreography), Jeremy Herbert (Set Design), Doey Lüthi (Costume Design), Adam Silverman (Lighting Design), Max & Ben Ringham (Sound Design), and Ted Hearne (Composer), with Kate Godfrey (Voice & Dialect) and casting by Heather Basten CDG.

The production begins its journey at Theatre Royal Brighton on January 13, 2025, before moving to London’s Duke of York’s Theatre for an exclusive 11-week season starting January 24, with a press night scheduled for February 5. This staging of Elektra promises an intense exploration of vengeance, grief, and survival, as Elektra, haunted by her father’s murder, awaits the return of her brother Orestes, who she urges toward a harrowing and irreversible act of revenge.

: Louis McCartney Returns as Henry Creel in Stranger Things: The First Shadow for His Broadway Debut


Louis McCartney, the breakout star from the West End production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, is set to reprise his role as Henry Creel for his highly anticipated Broadway debut. McCartney's performance in the West End earned him widespread acclaim, including The Stage 2024 Debut Award for Best Performer in a Play and the Critics’ Circle Award for Most Promising Newcomer. Full Cast Announced for The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical London Premiere


The highly anticipated London premiere of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is fast approaching, and Bill Kenwright Ltd and Paul Taylor-Mills are excited to announce the full cast for this thrilling production. Fans of Rick Riordan’s bestselling book series are in for a treat, as a stellar cast brings the beloved characters to life on stage this November.

As previously announced, the lead role of Percy Jackson will be played by Max Harwood (Stranger Things: The First Shadow), joined by a talented ensemble. Scott Folan takes on the role of Grover, Jessica Lee plays Annabeth, and Paisley Billings will be Sally Jackson. Greg Barnett steps into multiple roles as Mr. Brunner/Poseidon/Hades, while Joe Allen portrays Mr. D/Gabe. Samantha Mbolekwa brings Clarisse to life, and Joaquin Pedro Valdes takes on the roles of Luke/Ares.

Lauren Ward and Josie Benson to Lead Cast in World Premiere of Stalled at King’s Head Theatre


West End and Broadway star Lauren Ward (Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Dear Evan Hansen) and Josie Benson (Kiss Me Kate, Mamma Mia!) are set to headline the cast of Stalled, a new musical premiering at the King’s Head Theatre. This heartwarming and thought-provoking production centres around a group of characters whose lives intersect in a posh Seattle ladies' room. From Maggie, a woman in search of herself, to a frazzled mother, a neurodivergent daughter, a non-binary poet, and a queer computer scientist, Stalled tells their stories with soul-stirring melodies and rare authenticity. The musical promises an uplifting and emotional celebration of diverse voices, all navigating the complexities of modern life.

With a book and lyrics by Liesl Wilke and music by Andy Marsh, with additional music by Kyle Puccia, Stalled will run for six weeks, from Thursday, February 13th, to Sunday, March 23rd, 2025, under the direction of Vikki Stone. Two press performances are scheduled for Sunday, February 16, at 2pm and 5pm.

Producer Thomas Hopkins expressed his excitement about bringing this vibrant, poignant musical to the King’s Head Theatre, working alongside co-producer Liesl Wilke. Max Harwood to Star as Percy Jackson in Musical's West End Premiere

Max Harwood, who gained widespread acclaim in 2021 for his breakout role as Jamie New in the film adaptation of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, has quickly made a name for himself on both stage and screen. His performances have included roles in Netflix’s Black Mirror and the Olivier Award-winning Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Now, Harwood is set to take up Percy Jackson’s lightning bolt as he leads the cast in this thrilling musical adaptation.

As someone who ventured into the realm of Stranger Things: The First Shadow without much prior experience with the series, aside from watching a few episodes and a recap, I was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly captivated by this spectacular supernatural spectacle. The Duffer Brothers, with Jack Thorne and Kate Trefry have crafted a story that effortlessly drew me into the mysterious world of Hawkins, Indiana, even as a newcomer to the Stranger Things universe.

From the very first applause inducing scenes, I found myself immersed in the gripping narrative that skilfully combines elements of suspense, nostalgia, and the supernatural. The show's ability to seamlessly introduce me to its characters and the intricacies of their relationships made it easy to connect with the story, and I was quickly invested in the fates of these intriguing personalities.

The prequel introduces both beloved characters and fresh faces, each receiving substantial development and individuality. The performances are exceptional, characterised by universally nuanced and emotionally charged portrayals. Louis McCartney, in his striking West End debut as Henry Creel, delivers a chilling performance that combines twisted actions with an alarming charm. McCartney's masterful physicality, full of spasms and contortions, adds an extra layer of intensity to the role- I can only imagine how much physio he'll need during the run! Isabella Pappas embodies Joyce with fierce brilliance, seamlessly incorporating Winona Ryder's iconic traits while infusing the character with her own spin. Pappas creates a captivating, headstrong persona that garners unwavering support. Alongside her, Oscar Lloyd portrays James Hopper Jr. with suave charisma, delivering witty one-liners and exuding an aura that captivates throughout.

The brilliance of this show lies in the meticulous attention and craftsmanship dedicated to shaping the intricate backstories of every character. Each member is endowed with distinct intentions and personality traits, allowing for intrigue at every turn. There isn't a single weak link to be discovered, but special recognition is deserved for the performances of Christopher Buckley as the endearing Bob Newby and Michael Jibson, who delivers haunting moments as the tormented Victor Creel. Max Harwood as Alan Munson, injects copious amounts of humour, energy, and vitality into the narrative, fashioning a persona that practically begs for its own enthralling spin-off storyline; whilst Patrick Vaill brings eerie menace to the stage as Dr Brenner.

In the hands of Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin, the play unfolds like a blooming flower, or more aptly, the opening mouth of a demogorgon. It moves seamlessly between the whirlwind of action and the rich tapestry of each thoughtfully crafted scene. High-school hallways and bathrooms, the mundane backdrop of everyday life, transform into breathtaking alternate worlds in the blink of an eye, all thanks to the nimble touch of Miriam Buether's set design. Jon Clark's lighting is like a choreographed dance, shifting between mysterious shadows and warm sunlight, mirroring the transformative journey of the characters.

The story takes a deep dive into the shadows, embracing a genuinely dark undertone with jumps and eerie sounds reminiscent of horror films, all expertly blended into the production by Paul Arditti's exceptional sound design. Yet, within the darkness, there's a contrasting brightness—a nostalgic, retro Americana that permeates the air. Sprinkled with snippets of song, it adds layers of emotion and complexity to this multidimensional theatrical experience, making it a journey that feels both supernatural and believable.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow is a testament to the storytelling prowess of its creators. As someone unfamiliar with the series, I can confidently say that this instalment stands alone as a brilliant and engaging piece of theatre. It has ignited my curiosity about the series as a whole, and I am now eager to explore the it to uncover the mysteries that follow this captivating chapter. Whether you're a seasoned fan or a newcomer like myself, this show is a spectacle that you must see. Full of drama, amazing performances and genuine sincerity, it's a Creel-y Creel-y great piece of theatre.

The UK theatre scene is no stranger to jukebox musicals, but Girl From The North Country which features Bob Dylan's backlog, is a completely different and outstanding take on the genre. Dylan's work is the definition of storytelling, with each song creating a mood and narrative to follow so it really lends itself well to being interspersed into a show. 

Writer and Director Connor McPherson has taken the songs and set them in Minnesota (Bob Dylan's birthplace) against the backdrop of the depression; this leads to a dark show but it's surprisingly filled with a lot of light and humour and ultimately manages to be uplifting. McPherson's writing is truly wonderful, his rich, multi layered plot sweeps you up and takes you on a hugely moving but also intimate journey. Although at times things can be a little confusing you can't help but be drawn into the world of the characters and the story manages, much like life, to be both simplistic and chaotic at once.

The setting is an old boarding house run by Nick Laine, who is struggling to look after his wife Elizabeth who has dementia. Also struggling to make ends meet we see him try to stay afloat alongside the various others who come through his doors. Frances McNamee is breathtaking as Elizabeth, giving vocals that are so superbly soulful and smooth you're completely enamoured. Her performance is also amazingly witty and mischievous, often proving hilarious one liners and always keeping you on the edge of your seat; it's a real masterclass performance. Alongside her Colin Connor gives a really strong performance as the husband who is trying to hold everything together without falling apart himself.

Marianne (Justina Kehinde) was taken in by the Laines as a baby and now helps out in the guesthouse but is facing her own hardships as she is pregnant. Her father therefore is desperate to marry her off to alleviate some of the financial and social burden. Whilst his biological son (Gregor Milne) is an alcoholic wannabe writer who is completely stuck in a rut. It's really a portrait of a family who are struggling, which feels very relevant given the huge struggles today with the cost of living crisis and recession. Despite this, the musical (although its more a play with songs) isn't particularly maudlin, instead it's almost a celebration of resilience and relationships. 

Without giving too much away, there are also a number of other romantic and friendship relationships showcased, all of which are well rounded and beautifully nuanced. One of which is that of Gene Laine and Katherine Draper (Eve Norris) which is a small part of the show but one of the standout moments with their performance of I Want You being a vocal delight.

As a whole the performances are incredibly strong. Justina Kehinde conveys Marianne's youth and vulnerability in a brilliantly natural way. Joshua C Jackson is mysterious and imposing but also tender as Joe Scott and Owen Lloyd is wonderful as bible seller Elias Burke. The ensemble performances make this show as moving as it is, with every song being performed in perfect conversation with the script. Like A Rolling Stone is a definite stand out, as are the moments of silence. The cast are so in sync that rests feel like a communal breath and it's magical to experience.

Girl From The North Country is raw and poetic show which quietly sneaks up on you and leaves you pondering the important things in life. It's intimate, energetic, entirely engaging and a really great theatrical experience.

Stranger Things Star Gaten Matarazzo Will Return to Broadway in Dear Evan Hansen

star Gaten Matarazzo will make his long-awaited return to Broadway as 'Jared Kleinman' in the Broadway company of Dear Evan Hansen, the Tony, Grammy and Oliver Award-winning musical now playing at the Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street), producer Stacey Mindich announced today. Matarazzo joins the Broadway cast on July 19, 2022. Also returning to the Dear Evan Hansen family on July 19 are Ann Sanders as 'Cynthia Murphy,' and from the show's North American tour, Noah Kieserman as 'Connor Murphy,' and Ciara Alyse Harris as 'Alana Beck.'

Words could never express how truly honored I am to be a part of this company," Matarazzo said. "This show has taught me so much about myself and to be able to participate in any capacity, let alone on Broadway, makes me want to melt. I am ecstatic to be back on stage and eternally grateful for the opportunity."

Best known for his portrayal of Dustin on Stranger Things, Matarazzo made his Broadway debut in 2011 in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (starring alongside Dear Evan Hansen's 'Heidi Hansen' Jessica Phillips), was part of the 2013 Godspell cast, and last appeared on Broadway in the 2014 revival of Les Misérables, a role he also played on the 25th Anniversary North American tour. He is a SAG Award-recipient and was recognized by The Hollywood Reporter as one of the top 30 stars under the age of 30.

When he is not acting, the 19-year-old devotes his time to raising awareness about cleidocranial dysplasia - a condition that affects the development of bones and teeth. With the help of a Utah-based doctor, Gaten launched CCD Smiles, a Foundation built to help families pay their children's dental bills.

Laura Baldwin on The Importance of Female Led Musicals | Beautiful: The Carole King Musical | Interview

A jukebox musical with a book by Douglas McGrath, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical tells the story of the life and career of Carole King, using the songs she wrote as well as others by people she knew or were influential in her life. 

Taking on the role of one of these, is Laura Baldwin who plays Cynthia Weil, King's best friend and writing rival. Having previously starred in Waitress, Laura is no stranger to female led stories, she sat down to tell us why these stories are so important and what people can expect from this musical...


Give us the lowdown on Beautiful, what can we expect?
Well you can expect a story of what went on behind the music surrounding the life of Carole King, told by an AMAZING cast. You’ll hear incredibly nostalgic songs and hopefully you’ll leave feeling elated, inspired and a little bit warm inside.


Whats your favourite song from Beautiful and why?
God that is SO hard! The Locomotion is definitely up there but it has to be Walking in The Rain. It’s just such a stunning song and it feels so lovely to sing.


You’re playing Cynthia Weil, what do you draw from in your own life and what research do you do to play a real person?
So Cynthia Weil is the first character I’ve played that I don’t feel anything alike. I couldn’t find any similarities for a while so that was a new challenge for me. It did however feel really refreshing to become someone completely different and, play parts of her that don’t come naturally to me. Now we’re well into the run I do see myself in her, like I love making people laugh, so does she! We’re both very ambitious and love our work. It was great to finally identify with her in some way. 

I researched lots about Cynthia! I watched so many interviews and we talked extensively with Ed Goggin our director, all about the characters lives and motives throughout the show. I wanted to make sure I do her justice!! Hopefully I’m doing enough!


You previously starred in Waitress, another musical about female empowerment, what do you think makes these musicals so important and special?
Because we need women to be seen as the hero’s that they are and have always been! Waitress was a human story and Beautiful is a real life story, both with an underdog message. The characters find strength from within and that is always incredibly special to watch. Sara Bareilles is a power house as is Carole King. Their stories and music should be heard simply because of the talent behind them. I am honoured to be a small part of their work and portray the characters that are so dear to them, and inspiring to women and to everyone.


If a musical was going to be made about your life, who would you like to play you?
Oh Amy Adam’s or Kristen Wig just because I love them!!


What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring performers?
Keep the gorgeous people around you who lift you up! ALWAYS treat yourself after an audition. You will constantly struggle to balance everything and things will get hard but that’s okay. There will be highs and lows but the lows make it worth it. Stay humble, find ways to reconnect with yourself, book the holiday and know that your career doesn’t define you. I also feel like being yourself is HUGE and the moment I started accepting my weird crazy self, everything started to fall into place :) stay strong! x
